WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – An early lead and big runs were not enough for Palm Beach Atlantic on Sunday afternoon as the Sailfish fell to Caldwell University 79-77 inside Rubin Arena. The 'Fish fall to 4-4 on the season while the Cougars picked up their first win of the year.
The Sailfish jumped out to an early 6-0 lead as Caldwell was forced to call a timeout just 1:15 into the game. The 'Fish forced two turnovers in that stretch and block a shot as Dakota Zinser scored four of his 10 points in the stretch. The Cougars responded to score six straight and 14 of the next 16 points as Caldwell took a 14-8 lead with over 12 minutes to go in the half.
The Sailfish scored the next 15 points as Milos Kostic knocked down two of this treys in the run as PBA took a 23-14 lead with just under nine minutes left. Malek Barber's dunk in the middle of the run put the 'Fish on top 15-14. Later in the half Jules Jasmin threw down a dunk after a block from Bakari Warthen as the Sailfish matched their largest lead of the game at nine, 28-19.
Caldwell chipped away and after a missed layup just before the half, Derek Dorn nailed a 3 from 30 feet to give the Cougars a 36-34 lead at the end of the half. The Cougars led most of the second half, pushing the lead out to seven at one point.
Down the stretch the 'Fish retook the lead as Zinser scored inside with just over a minute to play to give PBA a 71-70 lead. Dorn answered with a basket in the lane to give Caldwell the lead with 37 seconds to play and the Cougars made four straight free throws to push the lead out to five. Michael Stones and Zinser both scored at the rim to cut the lead to one. The Cougars made a pair of free throws with just seconds left as a final layup by Stones wasn't enough as Caldwell made another free throw and PBA failed to get a final shot off.
Jackson led five players in double figures for the Sailfish, scoring 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting. Kostic finished with 13 as he knocked down three from deep. Barber and Jasmin each finished with 12 points. Lucas Morales led PBA with seven rebounds.
The Sailfish finished at 48.3 percent from the floor and made 7-of-19 from long range while Caldwell shot 47.1 percent overall and 6-of-17 from beyond the arc. The big difference came at the free throw line as the Cougars made 25-of-32 and PBA had only 20 attempts, making 14. Derek Dorn led the Cougars in the game, finishing with a game-high 28 points.
PBA is back in action on Wednesday as they travel to No. 8/5 Barry for a 7:30 p.m. tip.
