Sailfish Outlast Eckerd In Second Straight Five Set Match

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – No. 3 Palm Beach Atlantic was forced to come back on Saturday evening, defeating Eckerd College in five sets, 25-16, 19-25, 25-27, 25-10, 15-11.

Sarah Kimmey and Maddie Span led the way for the Sailfish as the two middle blockers combined for 23 kills and 19 blocks. After the Sailfish fell behind in the match 2-1, the defense set the tone in the fourth set as PBA held Eckerd to a negative .121 attack in the fourth set. Span and Kimmey both collected two blocks in the set.

PBA finished the match hitting .255 while holding Eckerd to .144. The Tritons hit over .240 in the two sets they won and under .200 in the three sets they lost. The 'Fish turned it on in sets four and five, hitting over .300 in each set.

After the Sailfish lost a 20-13 lead in the third set with the Tritons coming back to win the set, PBA came out to take a 13-3 lead in the fourth. Raegan Grooms recorded five of her nine kills in the fourth set as she was one of five players to record at least eight kills for PBA.

In the fifth Eckerd took an early 2-1 lead but the Sailfish scored seven of eight to take control of the set at 8-3. Three blocks in that run were the difference for PBA with Span involved in all of them. After the Tritons closed to within two at 11-9, PBA closed with four of the final six points with Ally Rohn, Kimmy and Span all picking up kills. Fittingly it was Span and Rohn picking up the block to end the match.

Kimmey finished as the team leader with 13 kills on 21 attempts, hitting .619 in the match. She also had eight blocks. Span finished with 10 kills and a .381 attack percentage and led the team with 11 blocks. The Sailfish's 19.5 blocks were a season high.

Three players – Molly Burkhardt, Jazz Schmidt and Grooms – all tallied five blocks in the match. Schmidt also added nine kills and four aces while Grooms registered 11 digs. Burkhardt led the team with 24 assists and also chipped in 11 digs. Ally Rohn finished the match with eight kills, 21 assists and 21 digs as Susie Forbes led the team with 23 digs.

The Sailfish will hit the road next week for three matches, taking on Florida Tech on Halloween night at 7 p.m. in Melbourne.
