WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – For the first time since 2014 the Palm Beach Atlantic volleyball team suffered a defeat on their home court, falling to Saint Leo in five tight sets, 25-12, 20-25, 33-31, 21-25, 15-13.
The Sailfish came out flat in set one, hitting negative .051 while the Lions posted a match-high .355 percentage. After the 'Fish rebounded to even the match in set two the Sailfish and Lions played a grueling third set.
PBA led by three at 17-14 before the Lions came back and took a 25-24 lead. The Sailfish fought off that set point and three more before the Lions finally took the set, 33-31. PBA had three set points of their own at 26-25, 28-27 and 29-28 but couldn't convert. The Sailfish registered 25 kills in the set while the Lions racked up 22.
The 'Fish came out on a 5-0 run to start the fourth set and never trailed, leading by as much as seven to take the set and force a fifth and deciding set.
In the final set the 'Fish took an early 3-1 lead before the Lions scored four straight later in the set to take a 9-6 lead. Five straight from the 'Fish put them up 11-9 but the Lions came back again. PBA took their final lead at 12-11 before Saint Leo scored three straight to gain match point at 14-12. The Lions finished it off with a kill from Britt Sederholm to end the Sailfish's 40 match home-court winning streak.
Raegan Grooms led the Sailfish with 17 kills as four players reached double figures on the night. Grooms also added 13 digs. Sarah Kimmey, Maddie Span and Ally Rohn all finished with 11 kills while Molly Burkhardt added nine kills.
Span and Kimmey were a force in the middle of the court as they combined for 17 blocks. Span finished with nine including two solo blocks while Kimmey finished with eight blocks. PBA collected 17 team blocks in the match with Burkhardt and Schmidt each recording five blocks.
Susie Forbes recorded a season-high 35 digs in the match as the 'Fish ended the match with 98. Rohn finished with 17 digs and also recorded 23 assists to record her 11th triple double.
The Sailfish will look to get back on the winning track on Saturday as they take on Eckerd inside Rubin Arena at 4 p.m.
