Balanced Attack Leads PBA to Sweep Over Northwood

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- Head coach Bob White got to show off a bit of his team’s bright future on Wednesday evening as he utilized many of his young players in a 3-0 midweek win over Northwood (Fla.) University. The Sailfish saw big performances from up and down their lineup as they closed out action at the Rubin Arena with their undefeated streak intact at 11-0.

Ranked No. 25 in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) national poll the ‘Fish took on their West Palm Beach counterparts Wednesday in hopes of extending their undefeated streak to begin the 2014 campaign.

From the opening serve it would become apparent the Seahawks (8-6) were outmatched as Palm Beach Atlantic connected for a .667 (14 kills, 0 errors, 21 attacks) attacking percentage in the first set as PBA rolled to a 25-8 victory.

White then turned to his bench and saw solid contributions from some of his talented freshmen class as players like Amy Schatzman, Stephanie Pingyin, Jamie Wienckowski, Abby Palkert and Lauren Alberti all contributed to the team’s success over the final two sets.

PBA would finish the night with wins of 25-16 and 25-16 in the second and third sets.

A balanced attack from the onset the Sailfish were led by Pingyin with nine kills while junior Stephany Brown and sophomore Katie Ballantyne each registered eight kills. Senior Becca Acevedo dished out 33 assists in the win while Schatzman chipped in with five assists in her collegiate debut.

Senior Melissa Buckingham led all defensive players with 10 digs and played libero the final two sets. Faith Rohn contributed nine digs and five kills while Emma Ballantyne connected for five kills of her own.

The Seahawks were led by Lexi Schnapf with six kills while Breanne Machacek contributed 10 assists in the loss.

Palm Beach Atlantic will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 20th when they host Southeastern (Fla.) University at 7 pm in the Rubin Arena.
