MIAMI SHORES, Fla.- With their regular season resume now complete, the Palm Beach Atlantic volleyball team put an exclamation point on what has been a remarkable season-long run by dominating Barry University on Friday night in a 3-0 sweep. The Sailfish were never seriously threatened by the Bucs who pushed the Sailfish to five games in an earlier matchup this season in West Palm Beach.
Matched up against their second NCAA regionally ranked team of the week following Tuesday’s sweep of Florida Tech, the Sailfish played with a purpose on Friday by beating No. 8-ranked Barry by the scores of 25-10, 25-14 and 25-20.
Senior Mariela Quesada performed well once again as she played her final regular season match of her collegiate career. The San Jose, Costa Rica native pounded out an impressive 17 kills with only three hitting errors on Friday while posting an unbelievable .538 hitting percentage.
Freshman Faith Rohn gave the Fish a nice lift opposite of Quesada with 11 kills (.360 hitting percentage) while adding in five digs. Melissa Buckingham and Rachael Holehouse anchored the strong backrow defensive performance put forth by the Fish as each tallied 10 digs. Lexie Grizzle gave the Fish a nice boost off the bench with five digs and a pair of service aces.
Becca Acevedo looked extremely comfortable, playing in her hometown of Miami, by dishing out 35 assists in the win. Freshman Rachel Jones added in five kills to support the cause.
PBA connected for a .330 team hitting percentage for the match including an astonishing .609 mark in the second-set as they managed 15 kills with only one hitting error in 23 attacks.
A stalemate of PBA’s good work this season has been their serve receive as they limited Barry to just one service ace on the night while the Bucs had nine service errors. PBA produced ten service aces of their own.
Senior outside-hitter Tania Torres led the way for Barry as she managed a team-high six kills.
The PBA volleyball team will now await a possible postseason selection to the NCAA Regional Tournament in the coming weeks. The Sailfish were ranked No. 4 in the latest NCAA regional ranking with the top-eight moving on to NCAA postseason play.
