Volleyball Enjoys Southern Cookin with Two More Wins in Alabama

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FLORENCE, Ala.- The Palm Beach Atlantic University volleyball team came away with two more wins on Saturday as they took on a pair of opponents at the University of North Alabama. First was a 3-0 sweep of the host UNA Lions then another sweep to their neighbors from the north in the University of Alabama-Huntsville.

The Sailfish solidified their No. 3 regional ranking that was handed out Wednesday by taking down three key regional opponents this weekend in Christian Brothers (Tenn.) University on Friday and then the two Alabama squads on Saturday. All three opponents compete in the Gulf South Conference which are included in the NCAA South Region.

The trio of victories pushes PBA to 31-3 on the season with a 21-1 mark in the NCAA South Region.

Match One (PBA vs. University of North Alabama)

The first match of the day for PBA pitted the Sailfish against a hungry and energized Lions squad. Not only were the Fish matched up against an opponent on their home floor but also one celebrating Senior Day.

Although they would prove their worth, it wouldn’t be enough to slow down the Fish who posted wins of 25-15, 25-15 and 25-16.

The Sailfish connected on a superb team hitting effort as they collected 39 kills with just 11 hitting errors for the match and a .308 team hitting percentage.

Senior Mariela Quesada paced the attack for the Fish with a match-high 14 kills while producing only two hitting errors. She topped the .400 hitting percentage mark while being joined above the mark by freshman Rachel Jones who registered eight kills on a .472 hitting percentage.

Freshmen continue to play a big role in the success of the PBA volleyball team as Jones was joined by Faith Rohn, Elly Raush, Stephany Brown and Rachael Holehouse as key contributors in the match. Rohn managed six kills and nine digs while Raush and Brown each posted four kills.

Holehouse along with sophomore Melissa Buckingham guided the backrow defense once again with Holehouse collecting eight digs while Buckingham came away with a team-high 10 digs.

Becca Acevedo did her usual good work from the setter position with 30 assists, even adding in eight digs.

Match Two (PBA vs. University of Alabama-Huntsville)

Moving on to the second match of the day, the Fish wrapped up their busy trip with another 3-0 sweep, this time against UAH.

PBA posted 25-11, 25-17 and 25-19 wins over Huntsville.

Quesada once again led the way with nine kills to pace all PBA players. Acevedo and sophomore Brytney Annis each added in six kills while Rohn and Jones each chipped in with five kills.

Rohn came away with a season-high of 17 digs in the win while Buckingham contributed 10 more digs.

The Sailfish will close out their home slate with a Tuesday, November 6th matchup with Florida Tech at 7 pm.
