Sailfish March On with Second Sweep of Day One at NCCAA Nationals

Box Score

KISSIMMEE, Fla.- After getting some kinks worked out in their opening match earlier in the day on Thursday at the Kissimmee Civic Center, the Palm Beach Atlantic University volleyball team managed an even better and more well-rounded performance in their second match of the day against the likes of No. 6-seed Dallas Baptist University. Utilizing a strong all-around effort the Fish cruised to their second 3-0 sweep of the day on the first day of pool play at the NCCAA National Tournament.

Needing just over an hour to complete their second 3-0 sweep in as many matches as the No. 2 seed, the Fish improved their overall record to 29-3 as they claimed 25-14, 25-16, 25-15 wins over a fellow NCAA Division II school in Dallas Baptist University.

Junior Mariela Quesada shook off an up-and-down first match of the day by her standards by dominating the Patriots (20-17) throughout the three sets as the Costa Rica native blasted home a match-best 14 kills while accumulating an impressive .481 attacking percentage. She would also collect her second double-double of the day by amassing 11 digs as well.

Joining Quesada in double-digits for kills came from a less likely source although extremely effective. Reserve outside-hitter Anna Hays, a native of Temperance, Michigan, put forth a strong match of her own by claiming kill after kill on her way to 10 kills on the night. Needing only 19 swing to achieve her 10 kills, Hays produced a solid .474 attacking percentage for the match.

Beyond the great work of Quesada and Hays the remainder of PBA’s lineup added in solid contributions as well. Senior Janeen McCormick connected for six kills on only 11 attacks (.455 attacking percentage) while leading a strong blocking core for PBA’s front line with a team-best five block assists.

Adding to the PBA block party was three from Quesada and a pair each from Hays and senior Lanae Robinson.

Freshman Becca Acevedo continued her solid work from earlier in the day with 30 assists while Melissa McPeek and Jessie Kubiak led the Fish defensive charge with 11 and 10 digs respectively.

Overall Palm Beach Atlantic posted a .292 team attacking percentage while limiting the Patriots to a negative percentage of -.009.

DBU was paced by Krystal Wunderlich who finished with 10 kills and seven digs.

The Sailfish will rest up for the remainder of the evening as they will be back to more competition in pool play on Friday, December 4th as they will take on No. 7-seed Asbury University at 10 am and then a match versus No. 3-seed Trinity Christian College at 4 pm.
