Carroll and Eldridge Go Out On Top with Senior Night Win Over Northwood

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- Taking on a pesky Northwood University team, the Palm Beach Atlantic University volleyball team showed spurts of domination mixed with occasional dry spells on Tuesday evening however in the end a solid effort by the Fish on Senior Night capped a 3-1 victory. Seniors Kristin Carroll and Jennifer Eldridge took to the Rubin Arena floor one final time in regular season competition.

With every healthy player seeing court time on Tuesday, head coach Bob White and his staff were able to not only pay homage to their senior duo while also showing the home crowd a glimpse of the future with a number of key reserves tallying important court time.

The Sailfish (19-8) started the contest in dominating form with a 25-13 win in the opening set. Tied at 8-8, the Fish ran off a string of ten straight points behind the serve of Allie Warren and their gritty work on both sides of the ball. After falling 25-22 in a tight second set, the Fish returned to their good work of the first set for the final two frames as they earned 25-8 and 25-17 wins to close out the match.

Eldridge and Carroll both proved why they have put forth a four-year starting career wearing the Blue and White as the tandem led the team all night long.

A native of nearby Palm Beach Gardens, Florida and a product of W.T. Dwyer High School, Eldridge came away with one of her more dominating efforts of the season as she pounded out 18 kills and a .341 hitting percentage while tallying another double-double with 14 digs.

Carroll was also strong at the net as the Billings, Montana native came away with nine kills and only three hitting errors while also serving a team-high three aces.

Freshman Christina Alessi had a strong showing on the night as well with nine kills in only 16 attacks for a superb .500 hitting percentage. Junior Lanae Robinson was also strong in limited attacks with eight kills in twelve attacks for a .583 hitting percentage.

After a tough showing her last time out versus Eckerd College, Sailfish junior libero Allie Warren came away with an outstanding effort with match-high honors of 31 digs while adding in a service ace.

Having only been with the team for a few weeks, newcomer Rachel Lawrence continued to show great strides from the setter position as she totaled a career-high 27 assists while adding five digs. Junior setter Jessica Way tallied 17 assists and seven digs as well.

The Fish came away with 20 total blocks for the night with front-line stalwarts Janeen McCormick (five block assists), Paige Mitchell (four block assists), and Robinson (one solo, four block assists) doing the majority of the damage.

NU was paced by senior Rebecka Ohman and Kara Wentz who each tallied 11 kills in the loss. Wentz was also whistled for 14 hitting errors. Cody Kiraly added in 25 assists while Carina Saunders showed her skills from the libero position with 19 digs.

PBA will be on the road for the remainder of the 2010 regular season. Three matches remain which include road stops at Ave Maria University and St. Thomas University on November 9th and 10th respectively while also taking on Rollins College on November 13th in Winter Park, Florida.
