Box Score West Palm Beach, Fla.- Playing host to the 2007 Pepsi Bash at the Beach Volleyball Tournament in the Rubin Arena, the Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s volleyball team got things started off on the right foot as they defeated both Southeastern University (Fla.) and St. Thomas University (Fla.) on Friday night in front of a solid crowd.
Opening up tournament play on court one, the Sailfish defeated the Fire of Southeastern by the scores of 30-20, 30-20, and 30-14 to sweep their first-round opponent. Utilizing her small but effective bench, PBA head coach Nicole Carter was able to mix and match some of her offensive and defensive schemes in their tournament opener.
Junior Brittany Erickson led the way up front for the Sailfish as she collected 12 kills to lead the squad while also adding in seven aces and five defensive digs. Sophomore Jennifer Eldridge held down the libero spot for the Fish and tallied a team-leading 15 digs.
Game number two featured a four-game match between PBA and St. Thomas University. The Sailfish opened up play with an impressive 30-10 victory following that up with a 26-30 defeat to the hands of STU in game number two. Despite the momentum switch, the Sailfish got things back in order and went on to defeat STU by a final of 30-23 and 30-18 to take the match.
Erickson continued her impressive play with a season-high 22 kills in the four games with junior setter Emily Ryerson notching 46 assists in the victory. Senior leader Bia Santos also registered double-digit kills with 14 and added 13 digs in the win.
With pool play now complete, the Sailfish move on to face off against Northwood University in an 11:00 a.m. showdown. The winner of that match moves on to the championship match which is slated for an 4:00 p.m. start time.
