Down But Not Out; PBA Shocks Barry in Five Games

Box Score

Miami Shores, Fla.- Trailing two games to none, the Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s volleyball team did the unthinkable if not improbable by storming back on the road on Tuesday night to take the final three games and the match versus Barry University in an important road game.

Looking sluggish and somewhat out of sync for the first two games, the PBA volleyball team righted their ship and took the final three games against the Buccaneers in exciting fashion.

“The match was a little crazy, but to be honest, when we play like we are capable and at a tempo we are comfortable with, we are tough to beat,” said head coach Nicole Carter after the strange but welcome five-game victory. “We really had to battle back and I give the girls a lot of credit for not giving up and taking it to them in the final three game,” continued the first-year head coach of the Sailfish.

Nursing a sore wrist and hand entering the match, it sure wasn’t evident that junior outside-hitter Brittany Erickson (La Mesa, Calif.) wasn’t at full strength as she totaled a season and team-high 21 kills in the five game victory while being a consistent attacker time and time again as the Fish rallied.

“She got in a groove and we were able to find her in key situations,” said Carter. “Briattany along with Bia (Santos) really played well and stepped their games up when we needed them most,” continued Carter.

A native of Sao Paulo, Brazil and a second-year player for the Sailfish, Santos tallied 14 kills, 16 digs, and two aces to help aide the PBA attack. Fellow senior Ali Mitchell (West Palm Beach, Fla./Royal Palm HS) notched 16 kills on the night while adding in 13 digs and two blocks.

Versatile setter Emily Ryerson (Winter Springs, Fla./Winter Springs HS) continued to show her value to the Sailfish squad by tallying an astonishing 57 set assists while adding 15 digs and assisting on three blocks. Sophomore Jennifer Eldridge (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Dwyer HS) paced the Fish with 24 defensive digs as she once again suited up as the team’s libero.

Hoping to gain momentum from such a hard-earned victory, the Sailfish hit the road once again for their next match as they travel to Lynn University on Saturday, September 15th for a matchup with the Fighting Knights at 2:00 p.m.
