Chris Maxon begins his first year as a Palm Beach Atlantic assistant men's basketball coach after spending the last five seasons as the top assistant at Indian River State College.
Under legendary coach Mike Leatherwood, Maxon helped guide the “River” to five consecutive 20- win seasons, a first for Leatherwood, while winning three Southern Conference Championships.
Coach Maxon was the Head Boy’s Basketball Coach at Pahokee High School from 1999-2004 where he compiled an impressive record of 109-45. Maxon’s teams won two district titles and two conference titles during his five-year tenure. For the past 14 summers, Maxon has taught at basketball camps at major universities all over the country including Duke University, The University of Florida, Syracuse University, The University of Pittsburgh, The U.S. Naval Academy and the prestigious Five-Star Basketball Camp.
Maxon also founded the “Basketball Skills Overload” Academy in Port St. Lucie, Florida which works closely with student-athletes on proper basketball technique and positive life-skill promotion.
Coach Maxon currently is an eighth grade U.S. History Teacher at Southern Oaks Middle School in Port St. Lucie. Maxon has been awarded numerous awards in teaching and coaching, including the Sallie Mae First Year Teacher of the Year Award, ESPN.com Coach of the Month, Disney Creativity in Teaching Award, School Teacher of The Year, and Palm Beach County Conference Coach of the Year on two occasions.
Maxon received an undergraduate degree in Social Sciences from Penn State University-Harrisburg, where he was a two-year starter and led his team in assists, steals and free throw percentage. He has also attained a Master’s Degree in Health Science from T.U.I. University. A native of California, Pennsylvania, Maxon resides in Port St. Lucie with his wife Cheri and their three children: Camryn, age 7 and twin boys Christian and Christopher, 3 years old.
