WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic women's tennis team faced a tough matchup against Eckerd on Thursday at the Mitch Gornto Tennis Center, falling 4-0. Eckerd claimed the doubles point and swiftly secured three singles wins to seal their victory.
In doubles action, Eckerd locked in the point with triumphs on courts two and three. Fiona Orza and Laura Ullrich overtook
Virginia Borja and
Anarella Brito 6-4 at No. 2 doubles, while Maialen Idiakez and Valentina Bronzetti bested
Elisa Buhagiar and
Sunshine Tarpey 6-3 at No. 3 doubles. The match at No. 1 doubles between the 'Fish's
Alina Hoermann and
Valeria Lopez and Eckerd's Catherine Cole and Olivia Lindestaf was left unfinished, with Eckerd leading 6-5.
On the singles courts, Eckerd extended their lead starting with Ullrich's 6-1, 6-0 win over
Daniela Ortiz at No. 6 singles. Lindestaf added to Eckerd's tally by defeating Hoermann 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Bronzetti clinched the match for Eckerd with a straight-set win over Lopez 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3 singles.
The remaining matches were halted before completion. At No. 4 singles, Buhagiar was ahead of Idiakez 7-5, 5-3, while Borja and Orza were tied with Borja taking the first set 6-4 and Orza the second 6-4. Brito trailed Cole 6-1, 5-3 at No. 5 singles when play stopped.
The women's tennis team returns to the courts on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. when they head north to Flagler.
