WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic baseball team faced a tough 3-2 loss against Bentley University on Wednesday at J.M. 'Jake' Rubin Park. The 'Fish lit up the scoreboard in the third inning with two runs, thanks to a standout triple from
Finley Holmes. Holmes has been on fire lately, racking up at least two hits in his last three games.
Bentley nudged ahead in the ninth, with runners on the corners, when a throwing error after a pickoff attempt to first base allowed the winning run to cross home plate, taking advantage of a walk and a wild pitch to set up the score. This misstep proved to be the turning point for PBA, who had kept things even since the third.
Earlier, Palm Beach Atlantic's offense sprang to life in the third inning.
Jake McNamara got it started with a single, and Holmes followed with a triple, bringing McNamara home. Holmes then dazzled with his speed, stealing home for a second run. PBA managed two stolen bases, surpassing their season average of 0.67. Defensively, the 'Fish were sharp, turning a double play in the top of the third to stifle Bentley's early push.
Despite the Sailfish's efforts to keep Bentley in check, the ninth-inning error and the ensuing run sealed the deal. PBA had limited chances late in the game, their last in the ninth ending with three straight strikeouts.
Gavin Ingram shone in relief, pitching 3 1/3 innings with just one hit allowed and no runs. He fanned three batters and gave up one walk, throwing 33 of his season-high 50 pitches for strikes.
Aidan McKee opened the game, pitching 2 2/3 innings, giving up five hits and two earned runs, while striking out two and walking two. McKee hit a season-high 51 pitches and recorded four ground outs.
Chip Hoornstra pitched a season-high two innings, surrendering one unearned run on one hit with two walks and one strikeout.
Christian Alonso and
Lucas Chantres teamed up for one inning; Alonso struggled with control, issuing one walk and hitting two batters, while Chantres ended with two flyouts.
Holmes finished with two hits and a triple, driving in a run and scoring one himself.
Michael Schettino made his mark defensively with five assists, including turning a double play.
The Sailfish return to the Jake on Friday at 6 p.m. for their first home conference series of the season against Saint Leo.Â
