TAMPA, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic women's tennis team faced a tough match against Tampa on Saturday, falling 6-1 at the Naimoli & Young Complex. PBA's highlight came from a hard-fought singles victory at the No. 1 spot.
Tampa started strong by clinching the doubles point with wins at No. 3 and No. 1 doubles. Lippens and Eriksson Sundling of Tampa overcame
Elisa Buhagiar and
Daniela Ortiz 6-2 at No. 3 doubles, while Ida Axelsson and Rebecca Presley edged out
Alina Hoermann and
Valeria Lopez 6-4 at No. 1 doubles. The 'Fish had a bright spot as
Virginia Borja and
Anarella Brito secured a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles against Karine Kulidjian and Alexandra Chebli.
In singles, Tampa extended their lead. Mia Zorrilla defeated Ortiz 6-2, 6-0 at No. 6 singles, followed by Eriksson Sundling's 6-1, 6-4 win over Brito at No. 5 singles. Kulidjian added to Tampa's tally with a 6-0, 6-2 win against Lopez at No. 3 singles. Hoermann delivered for the 'Fish with a resilient 6-4, 2-6, 10-7 victory over Presley at No. 1 singles.
The day wrapped up with Tampa capturing the final singles points. Nicole Casas narrowly defeated Borja 6-4, 3-6, 10-6 at No. 2 singles, and Axelsson secured a 4-6, 6-4, 10-8 win against Buhagiar at No. 4 singles, sealing the match for the Spartans.
The Sailfish return to the courts on Feb. 23 when they host cross-town opponent Keiser at 2 p.m. at the Mitch Gornto Tennis Center.
