WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic women's tennis team faced a narrow defeat against St. Thomas, falling 4-3 on Wednesday at the Mitch Gornto Tennis Center. PBA celebrated singles victories at the No. 1, No. 3, and No. 4 positions.
The 'Fish dropped the doubles point after a series of tightly contested matches. St. Thomas claimed the point with a win at No. 1 doubles, as Sachely Carrera and Sezin Akin defeated
Alina Hoermann and
Valeria Lopez 6-1, and at No. 3 doubles, where Alicia Rodriguez and Marta Miralles edged out
Virginia Borja and
Anarella Brito 7-6. The 'Fish triumphed at No. 2 doubles with
Elisa Buhagiar and
Mia Garber overpowering Jenesie Burgos and Caterina Antonini 6-2.
In singles play, PBA leveled the score with a commanding win at No. 4 singles, where Lopez bested Maeva Roguet 6-2, 6-3. St. Thomas responded at No. 2 singles with Leticia Orlandov overcoming Borja 6-3, 6-0. The visitors added another point at No. 5, with Rodriguez defeating Buhagiar 6-3, 6-2.
The Sailfish fought back at No. 6 singles, where Garber staged a thrilling comeback against Akin, finishing 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-6). The match reached a dramatic conclusion at No. 1 singles, as Hoermann outlasted Carrera in a hard-fought three-set battle, 6-4, 0-6, 1-0 (10-4). Despite a valiant effort, Brito was narrowly defeated at No. 6 singles by Burgos, with a score of 6-4, 7-6.
The PBA women's tennis team head to Tampa on Saturday afternoon for a Valentine's day date with the Spartans.
