Sailfish Push #4 Sharks to OT but Fall, 82-80

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.- Behind a career high from Breeje Schuler, the Palm Beach Atlantic women's basketball team (8-11, 4-7) played a great road game looking for the upset but ultimately fell to the #4 Nova Southeastern Sharks (19-0, 11-0), 82-80, in a nail-biting overtime showdown at Rick Case Arena on Saturday.

Breeje Schuler led the way for the Sailfish and had a career high 26 points in the game. Anabel Ellison followed closely behind with 16 points of her own, adding two blocks and two steals. KB Hadley contributed 14 points, hitting 8 of 10 from the line and swiping three steals. Whitley added an 11-point boost, thanks to three clutch 3-pointers.

The game kicked off with the Sailfish setting the tone, racing to an early 8–3 lead powered by Schuler's prowess in the paint. Schuler, with help from Hadley, kept the scoring up, and Ellison's fast-break finish extended the advantage. Although a turnover let Nova Southeastern pull even at 10, Schuler answered with a pivotal 3-pointer, and Darria Whitley knocked down a shot from downtown and pushed the 'Fish back in front. Toualeu's late three-point play cemented Palm Beach Atlantic's 21–16 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter saw the 'Fish rally, highlighted by Whitley's crucial 3-pointer at 7:27, widening the gap to 24–18. Ellison's pair of free throws bolstered the Sailfish's control, even as the Sharks tried to close in. Whitley's buzzer-beater 3-pointer at 34 seconds sealed a 35–30 lead for PBA at the half, with both teams adding 14 points to their totals in the quarter.

Palm Beach Atlantic surged in the third quarter with a decisive 10-0 run, ignited by Schuler's layup at 5:52 and capped by Hadley's score at 1:46, stretching their lead to it's biggest at 54-44. The Sailfish held firm, shooting efficiently at 8 of 14 from the field and dominating inside with 14 points in the paint. Despite the Sharks' efforts, the 'Fish maintained a 21-19 edge in the quarter, leading 56-49.

In a tight fourth quarter, the 'Fish fought to hold their ground, with Ellison delivering a critical layup and free throw at 1:21, pushing the lead to 64-59. Schuler added key baskets at 6:12 and 3:35, keeping the Sailfish ahead. The Sharks, however, managed to tie it up with a buzzer-beating 3-pointer, sending the game into overtime at 68–68. Bridie McCann, who was 0-10 from beyond the arc in the game up to this point, threw up a prayer, it hit the backboard and rattled around the rim before going in. The shot came as close to time expiring as it possibly could. The officials went to the monitor to review the shot. Replay was said to be inconclusive and the officiating crew stuck with the call on the floor which was a good basket.

The overtime period was a battle, with the 'Fish and Sharks trading baskets. Schuler, having a career night, fouled out early in OT. Ellison hit a 3-pointer at 4:08 that gave PBA a brief lead, free throws extended it to 78–75. But the Sharks quickly answered, with Mattair's late 3-pointer knotting the score at 80–80 with just 40 seconds to go.

Inside the final minute, Toualeu's jumper at 0:54 momentarily put the Sailfish back on top, but a last-second foul allowed Hoard of Nova Southeastern to sink two free throws, clinching the game. Ellison threw up a half-court heave that hit the backboard and fell away. The 'Fish's incredible road effort fell just short, ending in an 82–80 victory for the Sharks.

The Sailfish return to the Rubin Arena floor at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday evening when they take on Barry.
