ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The No. 4-ranked Palm Beach Atlantic men's basketball team clinched an impressive 83-69 victory over Eckerd College at the McArthur Center on Wednesday night. The 'Fish, now boasting a 17-1 record overall and 9-1 in the Sunshine State Conference, showcased their offensive prowess with 22 assists and 10 three-pointers.
Preston Le Gassick led the charge with 20 points, including four threes, and dished out six assists.
Alvin Tumblin Jr. chipped in 15 points and five rebounds, marking his sixth straight game with at least 15 points.
Christian Kirkland delivered a standout performance with a career-high eight assists, two blocks, and six rebounds.
Graham Worland added 11 points and eight rebounds to the mix.
Tyler Burton added 10 points and two 3-pointers.
PBA started the first half with a bang, leveraging early defensive rebounds and fast breaks to take control. Tumblin's layup and fast break dunk, assisted by Le Gassick, ignited a 6–0 run. The team kept the momentum going with smooth ball movement, highlighted by a
Blake Wilson three-pointer at 13:35, pushing the lead to 11–2. PBA showcased defensive intensity to open the game, holding the hosts to four points through the first 10 minutes of play.
Despite some successful layups, Eckerd struggled to keep up as the 'Fish found scoring opportunities, notably with Burton and Le Gassick connecting from deep. By halftime, the Sailfish held a 38–26 lead, maintaining their advantage through efficient shooting and sturdy defense, holding EC to 33 percent shooting in the first half.
The second half saw the 'Fish overcoming an early triple from Eckerd's Wyatt Triestman. Tumblin's defensive rebound and block set the stage for a Le Gassick layup, keeping PBA in front. Burton's layup, assisted by Kirkland, extended their lead to 45–38.
Eckerd made a push to cut the deficit to two points, but the 'Fish answered, with
Clay Payne's three-pointer pushing the score to 52–47. The 'Fish capitalized on Eckerd's turnovers and fouls, as
Kollin Claridy and Worland sank free throws to widen the gap.
A late surge, fueled by back-to-back threes from Le Gassick, another triple from Worland, and a strong defensive stand, sealed the deal. The Sailfish wrapped up the game with a commanding 83–69 victory.
PBA outshot the Tritons 49 percent to 40 percent. The 'Fish shot 48 percent from three, sinking 10-of 21-attempts. The Sailfish scored 16 points off 10 Eckerd turnovers.
PBA is set for a top-five matchup on Saturday, taking on No. 3-ranked Nova Southeastern. The game in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. starts at 4:00 p.m.
