WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic women's basketball team defeated Saint Leo by a score of 72-66, at Rubin Arena, utilizing a 14-steal performance to convert 22 points off turnovers.
Anabel Ellison led the team with 23 points, converting three 3-pointers and making 10 of 14 free throws while also recording five steals.
Breeje Schuler contributed with 16 points and 12 rebounds, adding two blocks to her performance.
KB Hadley scored 17 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the field and collected three steals.
Maddie Wallhoff, starting alongside her teammates, added four points and recorded two steals during the contest.
The 'Fish opened the quarter strong, with Ellison scoring a layup in the first 16 seconds. Despite trading leads with Saint Leo multiple times, the Sailfish gained momentum midway through the quarter with a 3-pointer from Schuler at 6:41, assisted by Ellison. Saint Leo kept pace with their own scoring, but the 'Fish maintained a slight edge, highlighted by back-to-back fast-break layups from Hadley. The quarter concluded with the 'Fish holding a narrow 23–21 lead.
Palm Beach Atlantic shifted momentum in the second quarter with a decisive 11–0 run, highlighted by Hadley's layup at 5:25, which gave them the lead. Ellison added a fastbreak layup to extend their advantage to 34–29. Despite Saint Leo's efforts to close the gap, the Sailfish maintained their edge, with Ellison's crucial free throw at 1:14 helping to keep the home team ahead. The quarter ended at 39–37, with both teams adding 16 points to their totals.
In a tightly contested third quarter, PBA gained early momentum with Ellison's three-pointer, assisted by
Anaya Smith, at 9:35, taking a brief lead. Despite back-and-forth exchanges, the 'Fish struggled to maintain control, with Saint Leo frequently challenging their advantage. Ellison contributed significantly by sinking crucial free throws at 6:01, extending the lead temporarily. However, frequent turnovers in the final minutes allowed Saint Leo to close the gap, and ultimately, a pair of free throws by Mira Hanna with two seconds remaining handed Saint Leo a narrow 56-55 victory as the quarter ended.
Palm Beach Atlantic surged ahead in the final quarter, seizing momentum with a 3-pointer by Schuler at 7:03 assisted by Ellison, breaking a 56-56 tie. A crucial defensive rebound by Ellison at 2:04 led to a fast break layup by Hadley, putting the 'Fish back in the lead at 64-63. Hadley extended the lead with a critical 3-pointer at 56 seconds, and the team cemented their advantage by converting free throws in the final moments. The Sailfish closed the game with a 17-10 run in the quarter, securing a 72-66 victory over Saint Leo.
