WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — The Palm Beach Atlantic men's basketball team (14-1, 6-1 Sunshine State Conference) sailed to a commanding 93-69 victory over Saint Leo (6-9, 1-6 SSC) on Saturday night at Rubin Arena. The 'Fish owned the paint, racking up 60 points inside, and dished out a season-high 32 assists.
Preston Le Gassick orchestrated the offense, leading with 26 points, nailing six 3-pointers, and dishing out a season-high 12 assists with four steals. Alvin Tumblin chipped in 20 points and pulled down five rebounds, while
Christian Kirkland notched a season-high 19 points and swatted away two blocks.
Graham Worland added nine points and grabbed a team-high eight boards.
PBA, the No. 8 team in Division II, kicked off the game with a bang, jumping to a quick 6–0 lead, highlighted by a Le Gassick 3-pointer. Kirkland made his presence felt on defense with a block and followed it up with a layup to keep the momentum going. After a brief 6-6 tie, the 'Fish took control again with sharp shooting and a fast-break dunk by Kirkland, pushing the score to 10–6.
The 'Fish stayed ahead by turning turnovers and defensive rebounds into points. Contributions came from all over, including another Le Gassick 3-pointer and strong inside play. The half ended with a layup from
Kollin Claridy, stretching the lead to 42–29 for PBA.
In the second half, the Sailfish picked up right where they left off, extending their lead with a Kirkland layup, just 19 seconds in. PBA kept the pressure on with 38 points in the paint and capitalized on SLU's mistakes, scoring 10 fast-break points and making big defensive plays, including six steals.
The 'Fish pulled away for good with a big run starting at the eight-minute mark. The trio of Tumblin Jr., Le Gassick, and
Jakob Hester ignited a 17-5 run in a four-minute span, increasing PBA's lead to 25 with 3:44 let to play. The run was capped off by a thunderous alley-oop dunk from Tumblin Jr. assisted by
Trent McNair.
The 'Fish displayed stellar teamwork with 18 assists in the half. Tumblin Jr. made a mark with several layups, ensuring the home team's dominance. The Sailfish closed out the game with a solid 93-69 victory.
PBA outshot the Lions 52 percent to 39 percent and forced 16 SLU turnovers in the game, leading to 16 points for PBA. The 'Fish won the rebounding battle, 47-37, including 15 on the offensive end.
The Sailfish are back in action on Wednesday against Tampa. The game is set for 7:30 p.m. in Rubin Arena.
