Sailfish Draw with Valdosta in Blazing Heat

VALDOSTA, Ga.- The Palm Beach Atlantic women's soccer team battled the Blazers to a draw on an incredibly hot, sunny afternoon in south Georgia. Numerous freshmen on the Sailfish squad made their presence felt in the contest.

Both teams held their defensive shape well in the first half with both teams unable to find the back of the net. Brooke Delzatto, the freshman 'Fish keeper, had a solid outing in net making three saves in the first half and seven in the second while only allowing one goal.

About 14 minutes into the 2nd half, the Sailfish earned a corner after an Abigail Longstaff shot was blocked out of bounds by a Blazers defender. On the ensuing corner, the freshman Longstaff played it short to fellow freshman Meren Patton who dribbled around the Blazer marker and banged home a shot off the crossbar and in for her first college goal.

The Blazers tied the match 15 minutes later, on a shot from Maria Rojas that got through two Sailfish defenders and beat Delzatto to the lower left corner of the net.  Late in the game, after a scramble after a Blazer set piece, Delzatto made an incredible one handed save to keep the game deadlocked at one. The Sailfish continued to push to find a winner with a couple more chances on goal but were unable to find the back of the net.

The Sailfish return home to West Palm Beach on Friday evening for their home opener when they take on Middle Georgia State. Prior to the match, the Sailfish will honor their seniors with a senior day ceremony. The match will kick off at 6 p.m. at the Rinker Athletic Campus.
