WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic women's soccer team defeated the Tampa Spartans on Saturday night for their first SSC win of the season. Maddie Kovar and Abigail Longstaff scored in the first and second half respectively to take the win for the Sailfish.
Early in the first half, both teams traded possession in the midfield but were unable to get anything going. After a few substitutions by both teams, the Sailfish were able to get the ball rolling. The Sailfish earned a corner, and Abigail Longstaff served a great ball into the box. Madison Kovar got on the end of the service and knocked it past the keeper with a strong header.
The Sailfish added an insurance goal 20 minutes into the second half of the match. After a collision between a Sailfish attacker and the Tampa keeper, the Sailfish were given a drop ball by the referee. Anna Foreman launched a ball into the box where Ariana Jones got a touch with her head, and the ball fell to Abby Longstaff. Longstaff rocketed a beautiful left-footed shot past the Tampa keeper for a 2-0 lead.
The Spartans crawled back within one on a Brooke Kittner 15 minutes after the Sailfish added their second. Brooke Delzatto, who had 5 saves in the match, and the PBA backline locked in for the final 10 minutes of the match to hold on for the 2-1 victory.
The Sailfish return home to the Rinker Athletic Campus on Wednesday at 6 p.m. when they take on Barry.
