PBA Notches Two in Midday Matchup at Lenoir-Rhyne

HICKORY, N.C. – The Palm Beach Atlantic men's soccer team concluded their brief road stint with a midday matchup against Lenoir-Rhyne. A late offensive burst in the second half of play gave the 'Fish a 2-1 victory, opening the 2025 campaign on a four-game winning streak.

In the first half, PBA was seen outshooting the Bears five to zero. In the first 15 minutes of play, Lenoir-Rhyne drew a red card to give PBA an advantage throughout the match. Juan Hermoso recorded the first shot of the afternoon just left of the goal in the '22. The Sailfish first shot on frame came off a free kick in the 33rd minute. Niklas Mahler drilled the ball towards the bottom left of the goal but was saved by the Bears goalkeeper. Rufus Roth marked a shot towards the bottom left corner of the goal, but the Bears defense blocked the shot to leave the match at a 0-0 tie heading into the half.

The Sailfish opened the second half of play with strong attacks on the offensive third of the pitch. Tin Vastic, Joshua Wicks, and Roth each had shots there were just wide of the goal until Marian Rutkowski recorded a pair of shots on goal. Lenoir-Rhyne made their first strong strike on the offensive third with three consecutive corner shots, but a strong defensive line from the 'Fish held them at bay.

In the '61, Vastic passed the ball up field to Fabio Reck who quickly shot the ball past the Bears goalkeeper for a 1-0 lead. Both teams were evenly matched until the 71st minute where Titus Beuckman took his chances but missed just wide of the goal. A foul on the Bears set PBA up for a free kick and led them to a shot on frame from Wicks. The momentum carried to Livio von Holzen who sent a long ball to Vastic who netted the Sailfish second goal of the match, giving them a 2-0 lead. PBA held strong on defensive until a penalty kick from the Bears in the final two minutes of play cut the deficit, 2-1. A save from PBA goalkeeper Flavio Giannini in the final ten seconds of play secured the Sailfish fourth consecutive win of the season.

The Sailfish return home on Saturday, September 20 to the PBA Soccer and Lacrosse Field to open Sunshine State Conference play. The 'Fish will host Saint Leo with a 6:00 p.m. kickoff.
