Softball Downed by Lynn at Home

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic softball team faced off against Lynn in a midday doubleheader on Saturday at Simpson Field.

The Sailfish looked to get back in the win column after dropping Friday night's series opener. Unfortunately for the 'Fish, some defensive miscues and power hitting from the Fighting Knights allowed Lynn to complete the sweep. LU took game one, 11-3 before winning game two, 7-4.

PBA is back in action next week against Florida Southern. Game one of the series starts on Friday at Simpson Field at 6 p.m.

Game One – Lynn: 11, PBA: 3

Lynn started the game with a pair of runs. A single, stolen base and a wild pitch put a runner on third. A fielder's choice and an error allowed the Fighting Knights to score. A sharp hit ball to Rhiannon Sibbett was fielded cleanly. She feigned at the runner advancing from third and tried to throw out the runner retreating to third; however, the catch was bobbled, allowing the run to score. A single to right field drove in the second run of the inning to give Lynn a 2-0 lead.

The Sailfish got one run back in the bottom of the first. Kaitlyn Campbell walked and advanced on a sacrifice bunt. Lauren O'Brien drove in Campbell with a single to center field to make it 2-1. Lynn got one run on four hits in the third inning to make it 3-1. Two defensive miscues cost PBA another run in the fourth to make it 4-1. The Sailfish had a chance to respond in the bottom of the fourth after two walks and a single, but they came up short.

Bianca Green made a big defensive play for PBA in the fifth. With a runner on third and no outs, Green made a diving play for a popup and made the throwback to third to double up the runner for a double play. Lynn struck for two more runs on three hits and two errors in the fifth to make it 6-1. Two home runs highlighted a four-run inning for Lynn in the sixth to make it 10-1.

The 'Fish answered with two runs in the sixth. Sibbett drove in Green with a sacrifice fly. The Sailfish scored another run after an RBI single from Daylin Hejtmanek to make the deficit 10-3. The visitors scored one more on a double steal in the seventh, extending their lead to 11-3. PBA came up empty in the seventh to end the game 11-3.

Olivia Zimmerman started in the circle. She pitched four innings in the game, surrendering four runs (one earned) on seven hits and one walk with one strikeout. Lacy Marty tossed one scoreless inning with a strikeout. Ashlyn Storms finished the game, throwing two innings and giving up four earned runs on seven hits.

Game Two – Lynn: 7, PBA: 4

The second game started as a pitcher's duel with two scoreless innings. Lynn broke the game open with a six-run third inning. The inning included two errors, four hits, and a three-run home run to give Lynn a 6-0 lead. The Fighting Knights made it 7-0 after a two-out RBI single down the leftfield line.

PBA got on the board in the fourth inning. Anna Wetzsteon and Madison Schlichte singled to start the frame. A groundout advanced both runners, setting up a sacrifice fly by Sibbett to make it 7-1.

Wetzsteon reached first to leadoff the sixth before Schlichte sent her first collegiate home run over the fence to make it a 7-3 game. The deep fly gave PBA some momentum. Sibbett walked and advanced to second on a single by Hejtmanek. O'Brien drove in Sibbett with a single to center field to make it 7-4. PBA mustered a baserunner in the seventh, but a double play ended any thought of a rally.

O'Brien led the 'Fish offense with three hits. Hejtmanek and Schlichte tallied two hits each. Wetzsteon went 1-for-2 with two walks and two runs scored.

Lauren Allen started the game in the circle. She pitched three innings, giving up five earned runs on six hits and one walk. Marty reentered in relief, tossing four innings. She gave up one earned run on three hits and one walk with three strikeouts.
