Softball Earns Win Over Florida Southern

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic softball team hosted Florida Southern on Friday night, opening its three-game SSC series with the Mocs.

The Sailfish bats caught fire, striking for eight runs in the contest. Four Sailfish finished with double-digit hits. PBA was treated with a strong performance by Lacy Marty in the circle. She pitched a complete game, giving up two runs (one earned) on five hits with one walk and two strikeouts. PBA snapped a 13-game skid, taking down the Mocs 8-2.

The Sailfish got on the board in the second inning. Bianca Greene smoked a line drive just out of the reach of the FSC centerfielder for a one-out double. Rhiannon Sibbett beat out a chopper up the middle, and Green showed off her speed, scoring from second after the throw from first.

PBA added a pair of runs in the third. Daylin Hejtmanek singled up the middle before advancing to second on a groundout. Evoni Rodriguez followed with a single to center field to drive in Hejtmanek to make it 2-0. Rodriguez stole second, setting up Larken Maseda for an RBI base knock to the outfield to extend the lead to 3-0.

Marli Szierer doubled to the opposite field to start a rally in the fourth. Sibbett singled up past the shortstop, but Szierer stayed put at second. Kaitlyn Campbell beat out a bunt single to load the bases with one out. Hejtmanek drove in Szierer with an RBI groundout before Lauren O'Brien doubled to left field to clear the bases and make it a 6-0 game.

FSC got on the board in the sixth courtesy of a two-run home run. Marty was only charged with one earned run after the first Moc batter reached on an error. PBA got both runs back in the bottom of the frame. O'Brien and Rodriguez singled, followed by an FSC error that scored one run. Two consecutive walks by the Mocs allowed the 'Fish to score one more, restoring their six-run lead, 8-2.

The Mocs mustered a base hit to lead off the seventh, but Marty struck out the next batter and forced a groundball that Evoni Rodriguez took herself for a 63 double play to end the game.

PBA finished with 12 hits as a team. Campbell, O'Brien, Rodriguez, and Sibbett tallied two hits each. Rodriguez and Sibbett went 2-for-2 with two walks. O'Brien and Sibbett led the 'Fish with two RBIs each.

The Sailfish look to clinch the series against the Mocs in their Saturday doubleheader. The first pitch at Simpson Field is set for noon.
