WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic softball team concluded its series against SSC foe Florida Southern on Saturday.
The Sailfish entered the day hoping to win the series against the Mocs after winning Friday's series opener. PBA struck for eight runs in the first game but it wasn't enough as FSC came out on top in eight innings. The Sailfish struck back in the rubber match. The 'Fish offense kept the bats hot, scoring nine runs in a dominant 9-1 win in six innings.
PBA hits the road to face Barry next weekend. The series is moved up a day for Easter weekend. Game one of the series is set for 6 p.m. on Thursday in Miami Shores.
Game One – FSC: 9, PBA: 8
The Sailfish started the game with three runs in the bottom of the first. Kailtyn Campbell walked to start the game, followed by a single to right field by
Daylin Hejtmanek to put two runners on.
Lauren O'Brien tripled into the right-centerfield gap to drive in both runners. An errant throw in from the outfield got past the FSC infield, allowing O'Brien to score on the play.
FSC answered with three runs of its own in the second off three hits, a sac fly, and a costly PBA error that led to two runs. The Mocs took a 5-3 lead after two runs in the third on three hits, one walk, and one error. PBA got one back in the inning.
Bianca Green's flyball was deep enough for O'Brien to tag and head home to make it 5-4.
The Sailfish regained the lead in the fourth after RBI singles by O'Brien and
Evoni Rodriguez drove in
Rhiannon Sibbett and Campbell to make it a 6-5 game. FSC fought back with two runs after a leadoff walk, sac bunt, RBI single, and a PBA error to take a 7-6. Campbell answered for the Sailfish in the fifth with a two-out RBI single through the left side to score Sibbett, tying the game at seven. Both teams added a run in the sixth to knot the game up at eight through six frames.
PBA had runners in scoring position in both the seventh and eighth innings but came up empty. The Mocs took a one-run lead in the ninth after a walk and a pair of singles made it 9-8. The Sailfish went down quietly in the ninth as FSC evened the series with the 9-8 win.
Lauren Allen started the game in the circle. She gave up one earned run on three hits and one walk with one strikeout.
Karen Vasquez finished the game for the Sailfish. She pitched 6.2 innings, giving up three earned runs on eight hits and two walks with one strikeout. Rodriguez led the 'Fish with three hits.
Game Two – PBA: 9, FSC: 1
PBA started game two the same way, putting up three runs in the bottom of the first. Hejtmanek singled, followed by a walk by O'Brien. Rodriguez singled to center field, but Hejtmanek was thrown out at home to keep the game scoreless.
Larken Maseda drove in O'Brien with a base hit to centerfield to get PBA on the board.
Chloe Nepveux walked before Green came through with a two-run single to right field to make it 3-0.
The 'Fish got another run in the second. Campbell beat out an infield single before advancing on a sac bunt. The bunt set up an opposite-field single from O'Brien, diving in Campbell to make it a 4-0 lead.
Olivia Zimmerman turned in a strong start in the circle. She pitched five innings, giving up one run (unearned) on six hits with two walks. FSC scored one run after two errors and a single in the fifth.
After being shut out for three innings, the Sailfish put the game out of hand with five runs in the sixth. Green was hit by a pitch to start the frame. Sibbett singled through the left side, and Campbell walked to load the bases with one away. Hejtmanek drove in two runs on a single to make it 6-1. O'Brien notched another RBI single to drive in Campbell to make it 7-1. After a flyout, Maseda came through for the Sailfish with two outs. Her single to left field scored two runs to end the game, 9-1 in six innings.
Lacy Marty finished the game in the circle. She earned the save, having entered in the top of the sixth before the five-run rally. She pitched one perfect inning. Hejtmanek led the Sailfish with three hits and two RBIs. O'Brien and Maseda tallied two hits each. Maseda drove in a team-best three RBIs.
