Softball Comes Up Short At Barry

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic softball team began its SSC series against Barry on the road on Thursday.

PBA looks to build off last week's series win over Florida Southern. Kaitlyn Campbell turned in a two-hit performance, but it wasn't enough to push the 'Fish to a series-opening win over the Bucs. A four-run first inning from the hosts lifted Barry to a 6-2 victory.

The Sailfish struck first in the opening frame. Campbell walked and advanced to second after a single by Daylin Hejtmanek. Both runners advanced on a groundout, setting up Evoni Rodriguez for an RBI groundout to make it 1-0. Barry answered with four runs in the first, courtesy of six sits.

The Bucs added two more in the third on two hits and a costly Sailfish error to take a 6-1 lead. Rodriguez tried to start a rally in the fourth with a leadoff walk. Larken Maseda doubled to center field to put two runs in scoring position with no outs. After a lineout, a walk loaded the bases with one away. A wild pitch allowed Rodriguez to score to make it 6-2. Unfortunately for the 'Fish a strikeout and lineout ended the rally with the bases loaded.

The Sailfish had runners in the last three innings of the game but couldn't string hits together. Karen Vasquez held Barry to one hit after the third inning.

Lacy Marty started in the circle. She gave up four earned runs on seven hits with one strikeout. Vasquez tossed four innings of relief. She gave up one earned run on three hits with two walks.

PBA concludes its series tomorrow with an afternoon doubleheader. The first pitch is set for noon.
