Softball Falls to Bucs

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic softball team finished its series against Barry on Saturday with an evening doubleheader.

The Sailfish sought revenge after dropping game one of the series on Friday. A pair of five runs innings in Saturday's opening game helped the Bucs clinch the series with a 10-3 win. The Sailfish held a lead midway through game two, but two late runs by the hosts allowed The Bucs to complete the sweep with a 4-3 win.

PBA softball is back in action on April 25 when it travels to Embry-Riddle. The first pitch in Daytona Beach is set for 5 p.m.

Game One – Barry: 10, PBA: 3

The Sailfish started the scoring in the top of the first. Daylin Hejtmanek walked and stole second before advancing to third on a groundout. She showed off her speed, scoring on a wild pitch to give PBA an early 1-0 lead. Barry answered in the bottom of the frame. The hosts tallied five runs on four hits, including a two-run homer and a walk to make it 5-1.

PBA answered with a home run of its own in the second. Marli Szierer hammered a two-run shot over the left-field fence to make it a 5-3 game. Unfortunately for the Sailfish, the lead only lasted until the third inning. Barry added five more runs on five hits and a hit batter to regain the lead, 10-3. Both teams were held scoreless the rest of the way. The Bucs clinched the series with a 10-3 win.

Kaitlyn Campbell, Chloe Nepvuex, and Madison Schlichte led the Sailfish offense with two hits each. Lacy Marty started in the circle, tossing 2.1 innings. Lauren Allen pitched 3.2 innings of relief. Allen gave up one earned run on five hits and one walk.

Game Two – Barry: 4, PBA: 3

Barry struck first in game two. A single, a wild pitch, and another single drove in the first run of the game. PBA knotted the game up in the third. With two outs, Anna Wetzsteon singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Wetzsteon advanced to third on a single from Campbell. That set up Hejtmanek for an RBI single down the left-field line to tie the game at one.

PBA took the lead in the fourth. Evoni Rodriguez led off with a base hit and advanced after another base knock from Nepveux. Bianca Green reached on a fielder's choice with Nepveux out at second. Rodriguez showed off her wheels, scoring from second on the throw to first as the Bucs attempted the double play. Barry answered in the bottom of the inning with a sac fly, taking advantage of a costly PBA error.

PBA regained the lead in the fifth.  After a Barry error, Wetzsteon made her way to third after a groundout and fielder's choice. She scored on a single through the right side by Lauren O'Brien. The Bucs took a 4-3 lead after two runs in the fifth. A solo home run tied the game at three.  After the homer, a walk and back-to-back singles drove in the go-ahead run.

The Sailfish had the bases loaded with one out in the top of the sixth. A groundball went right to the Barry shortstop who made the throw home for the force out. A groundout ended the inning for the Sailfish. PBA went down quietly in the seventh as Barry held on for the 4-3 lead.

Rodriguez led the 'Fish offense with two hits. Olivia Zimmerman pitched five innings as the starter. She gave up four earned runs on eight hits and five walks with two strikeouts. Karen Vasquez tossed one perfect inning in relief.
