SAINT LEO, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic baseball team completed the three-game sweep of the Saint Leo Lions on Saturday afternoon after winning both games of their doubleheader.
After a 15-7 win on Friday night, The Sailfish had an opportunity to win its first conference series of the season and complete its second three-game sweep. PBA took both games with five and seven run leads respectively.
The Sailfish return to action on Friday at 5:00 p.m.
Game One – PBA: 9, SLU: 2
The Sailfish went down early in the game when the Lions scratched across a run in the bottom of the second on Dane Hall. However, the Sailfish didn't get discouraged and scored the next seven runs of the game completely unanswered before the Lions finally responded in the bottom of the seventh.
Finley Holmes, a freshman out of Vero Beach, Florida, hit two homeruns in back-to-back innings in the third and fourth. These two homers mark the first homeruns of Holmes' college career. Patrick Rakes and Chris Amparo added RBIs of their own in the fifth and eighth innings respectively. Trey Miranda, Ben Green, and Jake McNamara all had multi-hit games. Aidan Pierre notched his first hit as a member of the Sailfish in the game.
Dane Hall earned the win in game one of the doubleheader. Hall threw seven strikeouts on 112 pitches in 6.2 innings while giving up only two earned runs on six hits and four walks. Steve Trone came into the game in relief and threw the final 2.1 innings. Trone had two strikeouts on 30 pitches.
Game Two – PBA: 8, SLU: 3
In the second game of the day, PBA took the lead in the top of the second and never looked back. Finley Holmes continued his hot hitting with a double in the top of the second to score Chris Amparo. Giancarlo Chantres added an RBI sacrifice fly in the inning to give the 'Fish a 2-0 lead. Holmes and Chantres added two more RBIs on hits in the top of the sixth. Kody Kelly went an impressive three for five at the plate.
Derek Langfelder got the start on the bump for Head Coach Kent Bottenfield in game number two. Langfelder got through six full innings, only allowing six hits and two earned runs. The senior pitcher earned seven strikeouts on 90 pitches and only two walks. A.J. Prendergast earned the save by throwing three full innings and only allowing one unearned run on two hits and no walks. Prendergast threw 44 pitches to get through the final innings and had two strikeouts.
