WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic men's lacrosse team competed in its first home game of the season against Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, in a nonconference matchup. The Sailfish dominated the Eagles in a 20-16 victory with an offensive led first half. PBA raises to a 2-0 record on the season.
In less than a minute of play, the Eagles took an early lead over the Sailfish, PBA retaliated within a minute with a diving goal from
Caleb Southard. With an even playing field,
Dominic Barnshaw charged from the top of the crease to give PBA a 2-1 lead. Continuing PBA's offensive barrage,
Curtis Goddard netted his first goal of the game from a distance for a 3-1 'Fish advantage. Barnshaw struck again with his second goal of the game, imitating his first goal by attacking from the top of the crease to elevate PBA to a 4-1 lead.
With the momentum rolling, Southard netted PBA's fifth goal of the night off the assist from
Patrick Law. Southard rolled off the defender and sent the ball in between the goalkeepers' legs for a 5-1 lead. PBA closed out the first quarter with a goal from
Cooper Laughlin, assisted by Southard, and Goddard's second goal of the evening. The Sailfish held a 7-2 lead as they entered the second quarter.
Continuing their offensive roll, Barnshaw scored within three minutes of the second quarter for PBA's eighth goal of the game. In a man-up situation, Law netted his first goal of the game off the assist from Goddard after quick movement around the crease and zipping it past the defenders. The Eagles quickly made work of their opportunities, seeing them cut the deficit to 10-5. PBA quickly responded with a pair of goals to close the first half.
Keegan Southard worked behind the cage before wrapping around and netting PBA's twelfth goal, followed by
Colin Delo winning a faceoff and taking the ball straight to net for a 13-6 lead at the half.
Straight out of the gates, the Eagles were quick to attack on offense and cut the score to 14-8.
Cooper Porter joined in on the scoring fest, netting his first goal of the night and growing the gap for PBA once again. A persistent ERAU team was seen netting back-to-back goals before Goddard elevated PBA's lead to 16-10. Southard closed out the third quarter by recovering the ball of a shot on goal from Carter Groezinger before flinging it behind the back, giving the Sailfish a 17-10 lead heading into the final quarter of play.
With one quarter remaining, PBA did not stop its offensive roll. Goddard netted the eighteenth goal of the evening, spinning behind the cage and driving the left corner of the net. The Eagles were relentless and found their own momentum, netting six goals during the duration of the quarter. However, Goddard scored his sixth goal and PBA's twentieth of the night to secure the 20-16 victory over the Eagles.
Palm Beach Atlantic will remain at home inside the PBA Lacrosse Field against Dominican College (CA) on Sunday, March 2 at 3:00 p.m. (EST).
