WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic women's tennis team fell in their home opener to the number two team in the country, Nova Southeastern.
The Sailfish faced the season opener with no small task as they took on one of the best teams in the country, the Sharks.
The matchup began with doubles play that was swept by Nova. Alina Hoermann and Valeria Lopez, playing in the number one position, fell in their match 1-6. In the number two position was Cecilia Peroni and Simona Karlsson Hantzis who fell by a score of 2-6. The Sailfish fell in the third position as well with Elsa Brenner and Alessia Pasaerini 2-6.
Things got better for the Sailfish in the singles portion of the day. The Sailfish, behind the efforts of Alina Hoermann and Simona Hantzis Karlsson, picked off matches in the top two positions. Hoermann took her match 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (11-9) while Karlsson took her opponent down by a score of 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Virginia Borja pushed her match into a tiebreaker but fell 1-6, 6-4, 0-1 (7-10). Anarello Brito came up short in straight sets 0-6 and 2-6. Frida Alsterhem fell in the fifth position by a score of 1-6, 2-6. Finally, Elsa Brenner lost in the sixth position 1-6, 1-6.
The Sailfish return to the courts on Wednesday afternoon when they host the #1 team in the country, the Barry Buccaneers at 2 p.m. at the Mitch Gornto Tennis Center.
