WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic women's basketball team narrowly fell to Lynn University, 64-62, in overtime at the Rubin Arena. The Sailfish forced 20 turnovers and recorded 12 steals but couldn't secure the win in a game that saw eight ties and 13 lead changes.
Darria Whitley led the 'Fish with a season-high 19 points, including four 3-pointers, and recorded seven rebounds.
Breeje Schuler contributed with 11 points and seven assists, while collecting six rebounds.
KB Hadley tallied four steals and added 11 points.
Anaya Smith posted eight rebounds and scored seven points.
The game began with 'Fish taking an early lead, as Hadley drained a 3-pointer at 9:36, assisted by Schuler. Maintaining momentum, Hadley contributed a crucial tip-in at 7:08 after securing an offensive rebound, leveling the score at 5–5.
Maren McCallister added a 3-pointer at 5:00, extending the Sailfish's lead to 8–5. As the quarter progressed, Whitley's jumper at 0:19, assisted by
Maddie Wallhoff, pushed the lead to 13–11. However, Trinity Mocadlo of Lynn tied the game with two free throws in the final seconds, ending the first quarter 13–13.
The Sailfish gained momentum midway through the second quarter with Smith's layup at 6:26, briefly giving them the lead. Wallhoff extended this advantage with a 3-pointer at 5:30, assisted by Schuler, putting the 'Fish ahead 21-19. However, Lynn responded, and a last-second tip-in by Serena Baker concluded the quarter with Lynn leading 27-26.
Palm Beach Atlantic opened the third quarter with a quick 3-pointer from Schuler, assisted by McCallister, establishing an early lead. Whitley then added another 3-pointer, pushing the Sailfish ahead 32-30 at 9:09, before Lynn responded with a scoring run to reclaim the lead. Despite some defensive efforts, including multiple steals by Whitley, the 'Fish faced a challenge as Lynn capitalized on several opportunities, extending their advantage. In the final seconds, Whitley sank a crucial 3-pointer with just 3 seconds remaining, narrowing the gap to 46-44 as the quarter concluded.
The 'Fish gained momentum early in the fourth quarter with Schuler's layup at 9:21, assisted by McCallister, which tied the game at 46-46. Smith's offensive rebound and free throw shortly after gave them a 47-46 lead. Despite Lynn's efforts to close the gap, Wallhoff's 3-pointer at 5:07 extended the Sailfish's lead to 54-49, maintaining their advantage. As the clock wound down, Whitley's jumper at 0:12, assisted by Hadley, pushed the 'Fish ahead 58-56. Lynn responded with a layup to tie the game at 58-58. However, in the final moments, neither team could break the deadlock. The game concluded in a 58-58 tie, with the Sailfish scoring 14 points in the quarter to Lynn's 12.
As the overtime period unfolded, the 'Fish capitalized on a turnover by Lynn at 0:53 with a timeout, setting the stage for
Blanche Toualeu's layup at 0:38 that tied the game at 62-62. Despite the 'Fish's efforts to maintain momentum, Lynn's Angelina Deleon scored a decisive layup at the buzzer, ending the game with a 64-62 victory over the Sailfish.
The Sailfish return to action this Saturday when they head down I-95 to take on Barry at 2 p.m. in Miami Shores.
