Women's Basketball Takes First Win of Season, 72-50

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic women's basketball team captured their first win of the season on Wednesday evening. The Sailfish took the victory 72-50 over University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez. Anaya Smith led the way for the 'Fish with 15 points on six of eight shooting.

The Sailfish came out on fire to start the game. The Sailfish shot 10-15 (66.7%) from the field in the first quarter, including 3-5 from beyond the arc. Khalia Woodley capped off the impressive quarter with a late three-point basket to give the Sailfish a 30-12 lead after the first ten minutes of play.

The Sailfish grew the lead even larger with a layup from Blanch Toualeu and an Anabel Ellison three-pointer to make it 35-12. PBA took its largest lead in the first half with 3:50 left before the halftime break when an Ellison free throw made it 43-16. The Sailfish took a 46-22 lead into the halftime break.

The Sailfish came out of the break right where they lead off. Another three-pointer from Ellison, gave the 'Fish their largest lead of the game at 56-24. Mayaguez worked their way back to a 23-point deficit at one point in the fourth quarter, but PBA quickly got it back out to 29 points thanks to a pair of three-point buckets from KB Hadley and Darria Whitley. The Janes got back within 22 at the end of the game but the Sailfish had already earned the big home win.

The Sailfish are back in action this Saturday with an early SSC matchup with Florida Tech at 2 p.m. on Saturday inside the Rubin Arena.
