WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — The Palm Beach Atlantic volleyball team fell to Lynn in a dramatic five-set match, 13-25, 25-19, 25-19, 20-25, 18-16, at Rubin Arena.
The match featured Lynn who entered the match at the No. 3 in the NCAA South Region poll and No. 19 in the AVCA top 25. The Sailfish entered the week at No. 4 in the region rankings, looking to avenge their five-set loss against Lynn earlier in the season.
Grace Reynolds recorded 47 assists and contributed four total blocks, demonstrating her effectiveness in playmaking and defense.
Harper Stokes posted 11 kills on 19 attempts, hitting at a .474 percentage, while also adding three blocks.
Kelsey Rogers was a defensive leader with seven total blocks and contributed 11 kills without any errors, finishing with 16 points.
Maggie Patterson showcased her defensive abilities by collecting 22 digs over the course of five sets.
Rachel Smith added 10 kills, hitting .250.
Sydney Corbett tallied eight kills with 11 digs.
"A great match in the Rubin to finish the home conference slate," PBA Head Coach
Jeff Huebner said. "Unfortunately, we came up short even though we won the statistical battle. Kelsey and Harper were both really good today for us as attackers and blockers and put our team in a great position to be successful. We have a great opportunity to go on the road and close out the regular season well this weekend."
PBA opened play with an effective attack, capitalizing on several Lynn errors to establish an early lead. Three service aces and
Kelsey Rogers' blocks were pivotal in building momentum. Reynolds consistently set up scoring opportunities, assisting multiple kills that extended the lead.
Nae Jordan's contributions, including back-to-back kills, helping the Sailfish conclude the set with a 25-13 lead.
The 'Fish mounted a mid-set rally with a series of successful plays, including kills by Stokes and
Rachel Smith, narrowing the gap to 15-13. However, Lynn quickly responded, pulling ahead with crucial points. Despite Palm Beach Atl.'s consistent efforts, including another kill by Stokes and a service ace by
Eduarda Dutra, they couldn't overcome Lynn's lead. The second set concluded with Lynn securing the win, 25-19.
In the third set, the 'Fish fought to keep pace with LU, maintaining a close contest early on. Stokes and Rogers each contributed crucial kills, aided by Reynolds, to level the score at several points. Despite their efforts, a series of errors and LU's effective attacking, including multiple points from Laney Wilson and Hope Passerello, allowed Lynn to pull ahead.
PBA fought back with a service ace from Dutra and key blocks by
Kaley Board and Reynolds, but the comeback fell short. The set concluded with a 25-19 advantage for LU. The game ended with the Fighting Knights securing the win with a final score of 25-19 in the third set.
The 'Fish secured a decisive win in the fourth set, finishing the game with a 25-20 victory. The set began with PBA gaining momentum through a series of successful plays, highlighted by
Rachel Smith's kill from Reynolds, setting the tone early. Stokes and Rogers contributed to the lead with key plays, including a service ace and a kill assisted by Reynolds. Despite a brief rally from Lynn, the 'Fish maintained control, with Board and Corbett adding crucial points. The set concluded with a strong defensive block by Stokes, sealing the win and ending the game with a final score of 25-20.
PBA began the decisive fifth set with an early rally, highlighted by Board's kill from
Savanna Rogers to bring the score to 2-1. Despite trailing initially, the home team leveled the score at 4-4 following an attack error by Lynn's Hope Passerello.
Midway through the set, Smith and Corbett helped the Sailfish gain momentum with consecutive kills, pushing their team ahead 9-5. However, Lynn responded and regained the lead at 10-9 after a service ace by Zara Rendic.
In a tense exchange of points, K. Rogers secured critical kills, but the set remained tightly contested. PBA equalized at 15-15 with another kill by Rogers, with assists from Reynolds. Ultimately, Lynn edged out the 'Fish, winning the fifth set 18-16 and ending the match.
The Sailfish outhit the Fighting Knights, .205 -.186. PBA finished with 10 aces, while allowing eight to Lynn. PBA finished with 11 blocks compared to just three for the visitors. The 'Fish finished the match with 11 service errors.
PBA finished the regular season on the road this weekend. The Sailfish take at Eckerd on Friday at 7 p.m.
