Men’s Soccer Falls in SSC Semis to Rollins, 2-1

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic men's soccer team's SSC Tournament run came to an end on Thursday night with a 2-1 loss to the Rollins Tars. Tin Vastic scored the lone goal for the Sailfish.

The game started off with both teams playing an intense back and forth style. Rollins got the first chance on goal with Flavio Giannini coming up with an early save. After a foul and a yellow card on Rollins, the Sailfish played the free kick into the box and earned a corner but were unable to find the back of the net. A few minutes later, Juan Hermoso got his head on a ball but was met with a save from the Tars keeper in the top right corner of the net.

Both teams continued to press hard for the next 15 minutes or so. A little over 35 minutes into the match, Flavio Giannini played a long ball from just outside his own box into the Tars' half. A Tar defender headed the ball backwards where Tin Vastic intercepted it and got in on goal with a defender right on his shoulder. Vastic dinked the ball over the charging keeper and broke the ice to give the Sailfish a first-half 1-0 lead. The Tars had some good chances in the half but the 'Fish backline moved well into shooting lanes to block shots. The Sailfish held onto the lead going into halftime.

The Sailfish kept pressing for an insurance goal coming out of the halftime break. Vastic had a great chance a little over ten minutes into the half, but the Tar keeper made the save. A few minutes later, Yousef Shakweer had a good chance on goal but the Sailfish defense blocked it before it made it on frame.

In the 62nd minute, Giannini made an incredible full-stretch save to stop a Finlay Prain effort and deflect it out for a corner. The Sailfish keeper appeared to catch a cramp after making the save. On the ensuing corner, Hayden Judge got free running towards the near post and headed home the equalizer.

In the 70th minute of play, Justin Nelson was able to get around Livio Von Holzen on the left wing and play a left-footed cross into the box. The ball found the foot of Zico Groenveld who put the ball into the back of the net to give the Tars a 2-1 lead. The goal marked the first time this season that the Sailfish have given up two goals in a single match.

The Sailfish pushed for an equalizer. With 9:18 left in the match, Ole Lichter played a ball into the box that found a somehow unmarked Vastic. He got his head onto the ball just misconnected, and the ball went over the top of the bar. Vastic fell to his knees in unbelief after the effort.

PBA earned a string of three corners in the final five minutes of the match but couldn't find the back of the net. Matteo Columbo got a shot on but couldn't get it into the back of the net.

With just over 40 seconds left, the Giannini left his net to try and help the team score on a corner, Joshua Wicks played a ball into the box and after a mad scramble in front of the net, the ball went out for a goal kick.

On the goal kick the Sailfish regained possession and created one final push. Tin Vastic got on the end of a bouncing ball from Wicks behind the Tars defense. His shot, disturbed by contact with the charging keeper, went over the top of the crossbar. The Rollins keeper booted a goal kick deep, and the final seconds ticked off the clock. The Tars completed the away victory and moved on to take on Lynn in the SSC Tournament final on Sunday afternoon.

The Sailfish await the NCAA Selection Show on Monday evening.
