WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic men's soccer team fell in the second round of the NCAA DII Men's soccer tournament on Sunday afternoon. The Sailfish dropped a 2-0 contest against the Flagler Saints.
Flagler, coming off a 2-0 win against Young Harris on Friday, came out with a hot start against the top-seeded Sailfish. Flavio Giannini had to be sharp early with the Saints getting two shots on goal inside the first 12 minutes of the match. Flagler had a great chance just moments later with a corner kick that almost went directly in but hit off the far post. The Sailfish responded with a pair of chances of their own. Juan Hermoso and Veit Klement each directed the ball on target but were met with saves from Ryan Rivas, the Flagler keeper.
With just under 15 minutes to go in the half, Marian Rutkowski whipped a short free kick over the Flagler wall for an excellent chance, but the ball just creeped over the top of the bar for a goal kick. Not even two minutes later, Flagler forward Luke Williams made an incredible solo run while dribbling the ball through the Sailfish defense and slotted the ball past Giannini to give the Saints a 1-0 lead.
Fabio Reck, Ole Lichter, and Hermoso again created chances for the 'Fish but the Saints found themselves up 1-0 at halftime.
The Sailfish came out of the halftime break looking for the equalizer and continued to push for one. Tin Vastic put a shot on frame early in the frame but Rivas was there once again with a big stop to keep his team in the lead. As the Sailfish continued to press and look for an equalizer, the Saints caught them. Flagler played a long ball over the top of the PBA back line, Tim Wahlborg took a touch to get around a charging Giannini and the Saints added an all-important second goal with just 15 minutes remaining.
The Sailfish continued to push and try to get back in the game but couldn't find the back of the net. Flagler held on for the 2-0 win and will advance to third round of the tournament to take on Rollins next Sunday.
