Vastic Scores in 2nd OT, Sailfish Advance to SSC Semis

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- On a chilly night in West Palm Beach, the Palm Beach Atlantic men's soccer team advanced to the SSC Semifinals with a 1-0 victory over Florida Southern College. It took over 100 minutes to find the game's first and only goal.

Florida Southern controlled much of the first half and frustrated the Sailfish' offense.  Both teams created chances but were stymied in the final third by excellent defense and keeper performances. The Sailfish had five corners in the half but were unable to convert. The Sailfish's best chance came off the foot of Niklas Mahler but was pushed out by the keeper for another corner late in the half. Both teams headed to the locker room deadlocked at zero, looking for answers to the other's defense.

Coming out of the halftime break, the Sailfish pushed back, controlling much of the possession. Both teams traded chances and possession but were unable to break the ice.

With 5:16 left in regulation, an unfortunate turnover from the Sailfish defense gave the ball up to the Mocs. Darcy Moffat launched a shot from just inside the halfway line, hoping to catch Flavio Giannini off his line. Giannini recovered just in time to keep the shot out and the match deadlocked at nil-nil. With just under two minutes remaining in regulation, the 'Fish earned a free kick in the attacking half of the field. Livio Von Holzen played a long ball into the box that found the head of Juan Hermoso. Hermoso directed it on goal with a header, but the Mocs' keeper was up to the task.

After 90 minutes of intense soccer, the match headed to sudden-victory, golden-goal overtime.

Matteo Columbo and Moffat both had shots for their respective teams, but both missed the goal high, and the match headed to a second overtime.

Within the first minute of the second overtime, Tin Vastic tried to fire a shot but was blocked by a Florida Southern defender. The ball fell to Von Holzen but his attempt just missed wide left of the frame.

Rufus Roth played a long pass to Marko Borovic in the final third of the field. Borovic laid it off to Vastic who made a move to create space from the Florida Southern defender and launched a right-footed rocket past the keeper and into the back of the net for the game-winner.

The Sailfish advance to the SSC Semifinals and will host the Rollins College Tars on Thursday evening at 6 p.m. at the Rinker Athletic Campus. The two teams met on November 1st, it ended in a 1-1 draw in the final match of the regular season.
