WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic women's basketball team comeback attempt fell short against the #20/#15 Nova Southeastern Sharks on Wednesday evening. The Sharks took the victory by a score of 74-66.
Carleigh Andrews got the scoring started for the 'Fish by making a layup for the first bucket of the game. However, Nova got hot and didn't look back. Behind ten first quarter points from Madison Cloonan, the Sharks got out to a 25-18 lead after one.
The second quarter looked quite similar to the first with the Sharks forcing seven PBA turnovers and outscoring the Sailfish 19-10 in the frame to take a 44-28 lead into the halftime break.
Despite being down 16 at the half to a top-20 team in the country, the Sailfish did not pack it in. They kept fighting.
With contributions from everyone on the floor, the Sailfish kept chipping away at the Nova lead. With buckets from Karyzma Pierre, Kash Ayuso and Katelynn Hagy, the Sailfish cut the lead down to ten going into the final quarter.
After two free throws to start the fourth quarter from Anabel Ellison, who is shooting a team leading .891 (57-64) from the charity stripe, the Sailfish cut the Sharks lead to just eight. However, that would be the closest they would get. It seemed for every bucket or stop the Sailfish got, Nova would respond with one of their own and PBA was unable to breakthrough.
Rebounding was a massive factor for Nova. The Sharks out-rebounded the Sailfish 51-29 and outscored the Sailfish 18-2 in second chance points.
Kash Ayuso and Anabel Ellison lead the Sailfish in scoring each with 12 points. Katelynn Hagy came in right behind them with a season-high 11 points which ties her career best.
The Sailfish women's basketball team returns to the floor on Saturday at 2 p.m where they look to bounce back at home against Eckerd College.
