Sailfish Come from Behind to Defeat Lions

ST. LEO, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic women's basketball team overcame an eleven-point deficit in the third quarter to get the come behind win over the Saint Leo Lions on Saturday afternoon. Karyzma Pierre led the way for the Sailfish with a season-high scoring performance of 23 points.

The first quarter was relatively even with Saint Leo taking the lead 19-16 after the first ten minutes. The Sailfish shot an efficient 6-13 (46.2%) from the field but thanks to 7-8 (87.5%) free throw shooting from the Lions, PBA found themselves down going into the second quarter.

It was much of the same story in the second frame for both teams. Pierre and Vanessa McManus of Saint Leo went toe to toe with 10 points each in the quarter. PBA found themselves down three at the halftime break.

The Lions came out hot for the third quarter. A six to nothing run to start the second half stretched the Lions lead out to 11 points with 7:25 left in the quarter. With buckets from Anabel Ellison and Pierre, including a buzzer-beating offensive putback from the latter, the Sailfish brought the game within six points heading into the final frame.

Darria Whitley and Kash Ayuso made their presence felt in a fourth quarter that saw the Sailfish outscore the Lions 24-9. Starting off with 13-0 run, PBA took the lead in the final quarter and never looked back. Ayuso and Whitley lead the way in the final frame with 9 and 7 points respectively.

The Sailfish had four players in double figures. Pierre led the way with 23 points. Ayuso was right behind her with 17 of her own. Whitley followed behind 14. Ellison rounded out the group of four with ten points.

The Sailfish women's basketball team returns to the floor on Wednesday evening at 5:30 p.m. when they host the Nova Southeastern Sharks inside the Rubin Arena.
