Women's Basketball Fights for Win Over Knights

BOCA RATON, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic women's basketball team battled to a 61-53 win over the Lynn Fighting Knights on Saturday afternoon. The Sailfish, fueled by a 22-point performance from Kash Ayuso held onto the victory despite a valiant comeback effort from the Knights.

The Sailfish got off to a hot start in the first quarter, quickly jumping out to an 11-4 lead just over halfway through the frame. PBA continued the hot start and forced a Lynn timeout after Zoe Wortinger capped off a 9-0 run with a massive three ball.

It wasn't so much the offense, shooting only 25% (4-12) from the field, but the defense that PBA was playing. The zone defense that the 'Fish threw at the Fighting Knights early in the game gave Lynn fits. Lynn did not hit its first field goal until 47 seconds left in the first quarter on a three ball from Makayla Hemingway.

The second quarter was a back-and-forth affair with both teams trading buckets in the period. Ayuso led the way for PBA with 9 points in the quarter. The Sailfish outscored the Knights 13-11 in the 10 minutes and took a 29-20 lead into the halftime break.

The Sailfish saw their lead slowly evaporate over the third quarter. PBA had no answer for Trinity Mocadlo who had twelve points in the frame. However, thanks to a couple of three pointers from Ayuso and Darria Whitley, the Sailfish never lost the lead in the quarter.

Things got tense down the wire early in the fourth quarter. Thanks to a 5-0 run from Lynn to start the frame, PBA found themselves down for the first time in the matchup. However, two three-pointers from Katelynn Hagy gave the Sailfish back the lead and PBA never looked back. Six free throws from Anabel Ellison iced the game and the Sailfish came out on top with an eight-point victory.
