DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic men's basketball team traveled to Embry-Riddle on Wednesday night.
PBA (14-2, 7-1 SSC) re-entered the NABC top-25 at No. 23 on Tuesday. The Sailfish were trailing at halftime, but PBA put on an offensive showcase in the second half to pull away from the Eagles (11-5, 5-3 SSC). The Sailfish scored 53 points on 72 percent from the field, including 16 points from
Jose Roberto Tanchyn in the second half to take down Embry-Riddle 88-73.
Tanchyn led the 'Fish offense with 20 points, eight rebounds, and four blocks.
Joshua Ward scored 17 points, passing out eight assists, and grabbing six boards.
Broderick Ellis was on fire, notching a career-high 16 points on 7-for-8 from the field.
Jamaal Walker tallied 14 points.
Jakob Hester had a team-high nine rebounds with three assists.
Graham Worland added 10 points off the bench.
The first half was tightly contested before Embry-Riddle caught the hot hand from three for three minutes. The Sailfish fell behind by double-digits midway through the half after some turnovers on offense leading to several 3-pointers for the hosts. ERAU won the battle of the boards in the first period, generating offense from 10 offensive rebounds. The PBA defense stepped up to end the half, allowing Ellis and Tanchyn to cut into the lead. PBA still trailed 38-35 at halftime.
The Sailfish quickly regained the lead after a 3-pointer from
Tyler Burton and back-to-back layups from Hester at the start of the second half. PBA improved at taking care of the ball and rebounding the basketball, limiting second-chance points for ERAU. The game was tied at 55 with 12 minutes to play before a 3-ball from Worland, a jumper from Tanchyn, and an old-fashioned 3-point play from Ward made it a 63-55 PBA lead with 10 minutes to play.
The balanced attack of Tanchyn, Ward, Walker, and Ellis padded the PBA lead down the stretch. At the 4:32 mark, the Sailfish rattled off a 14-2 run, including eight points from Tanchyn, to put the game away and give the 'Fish a 20-point lead. PBA earned a statement road win over ERAU, 88-73.
PBA outshot ERAU 58 percent to 39 percent in the game. PBA ended up winning the battle of the boards, 39-35. The Sailfish continued to boast one of the best 3-point defenses in the country, holding ERAU to 6-for-22 from beyond the arc. The 'Fish bench outscored ERAU's bench 46-13.
The Sailfish seek their fifth straight win on Saturday, traveling to Tampa. Tip-off against the Spartans is set for 4 p.m.
