9/7/2024 7:25:00 PM

Box Score LAKELAND, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic volleyball team finished its time at the FSC Classic on Saturday, playing a match against American International.

The Sailfish (1-2) frustrated the Yellow Jackets (0-3) attack all afternoon. Harper Stokes turned in a historic performance, leading the way with 11 total blocks. The junior notched the most total blocks in a three-set match against a Division II school in PBA's DII era. Kaileigh Ammons and Savanna Rogers also totaled six blocks each.

The pesky Sailfish block totaled 17 as a team, the most against another Division II school in a three-set match. The Sailfish held AIC to a -.054 hitting percentage, leading to a dominating sweep.

"Today, our blocking set the tone on how competitive our program is going to be," PBA Head Coach Jeff Huebner said. "One of the things I love about this group is how we are ALL IN to fight for one another, and Kaileigh set the tone for us early."

In addition to her 11 blocks, Stokes finished with six kills, hitting .286. Sydney Corbett led the offense with 10 kills, along with seven digs and three blocks. Abbie Zylstra tallied seven kills with four digs and two blocks. Ammons notched six kills of her own, hitting a team-high .400. Giulia Santuari finished with five blocks. Rogers led the 'Fish with assists and nine digs. Eduarda Dutra led PBA with 23 digs.

"Serve Receive continues to be a strength for us, and the defensive execution was high, starting with Duda, who settled in today," Huebner said. "Sav did a good job of being thoughtful about the offense and getting our hitters in productive positions throughout the match."

American International hit in the negatives in each set, including -0.024 in the opening frame. Ammons was on fire to start the match, tallying four kills and three blocks. The Yellow Jackets held a 17-16 lead midway through the set, but a 6-0 run, including three blocks by Stokes, gave PBA a 22-17 lead. The Sailfish held on for the win, capped off by a kill from Rogers to clinch the set 25-21.

The Sailfish turned up the efficiency in the second set. PBA hit a match-best .225 in the set. The trio of Stokes, Corbett, and Santuari built a comfortable lead for the 'Fish midway through the period. Kills by Zylstra and Ammons put the match out of reach later in the set, giving PBA a 24-17 lead. Corbett ended the set with her fourth kill of the frame as PBA took the set 25-18.

AIC posted its worst offensive efficiency in the third set, hitting -.083. The Sailfish wasted no time putting the match away, cruising to a 25-16 win to clinch the match.

PBA outhit the Yellow Jackets, .183 to -.054 in the match. The Sailfish posted a 70-percent side-out percentage.

The Sailfish play their home opener next weekend when they host the 2024 Hyatt Place Bash at the Beach. PBA opens the tournament with a primetime match against Cedarville on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

"We can't wait to be back in Rubin and share the enthusiasm and excitement of Sailfish Volleyball with our fans and 'Fish Family," Huebner said."
