Late Heroics Lead Sailfish to Opening Night Victory

SAINT LEO, Fla.- The PBA women's soccer team took home a hard-fought win over the Saint Leo Lions in by a score of 2-1.

The Sailfish, undeterred by a long lightning delay before the game, opened the scoring in the 20th minute on a strike from Marina Leal assisted by Emma Canty and Lea Loubier. Saint Leo struck back quickly. Just 16 seconds later, the Lions returned the favor with a goal of their own from Arielle Jacus to level the match at one apiece.

Backed by a stellar performance from Taylor Jackson, the Sailfish were able to stave off the Lion's attack force for the rest of the game. Jackson, a redshirt senior, made nine saves with only one goal allowed over the 90 minutes.

The Sailfish controlled much of the possession in the second half but struggled to find a finish in the final third of the field. However, in the match's final moments, Emma Canty capitalized on a Lions mistake in front of goal. A stellar individual effort from Canty on the Lions' throw-in prior lead to a Leah Loubier free kick. The freekick caused commotion inside the 18-yard box and Canty powered a left-footed finish into the back of the net in the final minute of the game.

The victory marks Coach Stephanie Cradduck's first win as head coach of the Sailfish.

PBA opens the season 1-0 and will take on Mississippi College on Saturday at 3:30 in the Sailfish' home opener.
