Sailfish Push #11 Eagles to Limit In Home SSC Battle

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic women's lacrosse team played host to one of the top sides in the country today as they hosted No. 11 ranked Embry-Riddle. The Sailfish led throughout the opening half and into the third quarter before the visitors found their footing as the 'Fish fell 15-12. PBA's record moves to 3-9 overall and 0-5 in Sunshine State Conference play.

After an opening ERAU goal, the majority of the first quarter was all Sailfish as they went on a 4-0 scoring run. Ella Howlin dished out two assists to Addyson Johnson and Rachel Delate, while Mattie Davis found the back of the net and Delate scored again in the scoring run. Georgia Karns earned the start in net and was strong throughout as she made seven first-half saves to keep the 'Fish in the lead. It turned into a game of runs as the visitors scored the next three to tie the game, but the Sailfish once again had an answer as Delate and Howlin scored in a low-scoring second quarter as PBA led the ranked Eagles 6-4 at the halftime break.

After dominating draw controls in the first half, 9-3, the Eagles won 9-of-10 in the third quarter. They parlayed that extra possession into nine shots while the Sailfish got four and ERAU outscored PBA 7-3 in the third quarter. Despite that, PBA was still within striking distance as Johnson scored two goals late in the quarter to put PBA down just two goals, 11-9.

The Eagles seized momentum in the game by scoring the first three goals of the fourth quarter. Despite falling down late, the Sailfish continued to battle to the end as Delate and Taryn Thompson scored to cut the deficit to three with three minutes left. ERAU scored the next goal to put the game away and end with a 15-12 victory.

Delate led the Sailfish by scoring a game-high five goals and taking her season total to 44. In goal, Karns finished the afternoon with 12 saves while seeing 33 total shots from Embry-Riddle. Defensively, the 'Fish were strong throughout the game as the trio of Katie Caras, Neely Taylor, and Sara Metheny led the way. The group each had three ground balls while Caras led the way by causing five turnovers. Metheny made an impact in all three areas of the field as she won six draw controls to go along with her three ground balls.

The Sailfish have a quick turnaround as they are back in action on the road this Wednesday. They face a Saint Leo side that carries an 8-5 record on the season.
