Sailfish Sweep Rollins in Saturday Double-Header

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic baseball team swept Rollins College in a double header matchup on Saturday afternoon. The Sailfish (18-25) have now won five of their last six games.

GAME ONE: PBA: 4 | RC: 2

Ryan Webster started on the mound for the Sailfish, and it took both teams some time to get going early in the game. Through the first three innings, both teams were scoreless, but PBA was the first to strike in the bottom of the fourth inning. After Patrick Rakes singled to left field and Jake McNamara reached first right after on an error by Rollins, Sean Williams then got himself an RBI after he doubled to left field to send Rakes home and give the 'Fish a 1-0 lead.

The Tars responded back in the top of the fifth, scoring two quick runs to give them a 2-1 lead over PBA. The Sailfish responded right back to tie the game up at two apiece after Ben Green and Sal Grinstead both got walked, then Nate Housen hit a single to get the RBI and send Green to the plate.

Both teams were scoreless through the sixth, and in the top of the seventh, PBA got back on the board with another run after a grounded out by Rakes that sent Green home for his second run of the game to give the 'Fish a 3-2 lead. In the top of the eighth, Coach Bottenfield made his first pitching change, replacing Webster with Justin Lovell. Webster only allowed three hits in seven innings, with two strikeouts and seven grounded outs. Williams got on base off a single, then got to second after a bunt by Matty Warren, which led Matthew Faranda to get an RBI after he singled to send Williams home for his first run.

The 'Fish led 4-2 going into the final inning, and the closer, Isaac Beebe, replaced Lovell at the mound to finish the game. Lovell only pitched 0.1 innings and gave up one hit in two batters faced. Beebe came up big once again, forcing three outs on a couple fly balls and a strikeout to give PBA the 4-2 victory over the Tars.

Williams, Rakes, Housen, and Faranda all had an RBI each in the game. Williams and Faranda also managed to get two hits, as well as Matty Warren. Webster was credited with his fourth victory as pitcher and is still undefeated on the season, while Beebe got his seventh save of the year.

GAME TWO: PBA: 6 | RC: 0

PBA took full control of this game and did not look back after their first run in the bottom of the second inning. The play was created after a Patrick Rakes walk and a Stanton Leuthner single to get a man on first and second. Shortly after, Giancarlo Chantres reached first on an error by Rollins third baseman, which gave him the RBI and sent Rakes home for the PBA's first score of the game.

PBA managed to keep the Tars scoreless throughout the whole game, and in the bottom of the seventh, they caught fire. It all started after Matthew Faranda and Sal Grinstead were walked and Ben Green singled to get bases loaded. Then came a huge hit out of the park for a home run by Nate Housen to get four RBIs and a 5-0 Sailfish lead.

Derek Langfelder started the game at the mound, and after pitching seven innings, he was replaced by A.J. Prendergast for the first pitching change of the game. Langfelder had himself a game, allowing only two hits, zero runs, and having seven strikeouts in 29 batters he faced.

In the bottom of the eighth, the 'Fish scored their final run of the game. That was after McNamara singled, then advanced on a wild pitch the next play. Shortly after, Chantres got walked, and Raymond Hawkins hit a sacrifice fly to get an RBI and put the Sailfish up 6-0 over the Tars. Prendergast did some nice work in his short time on the mound, allowing no hits or runs and having three strikeouts to seal the victory for the 'Fish.

Housen was the leader in RBIs with four, and he also had a run and two hits. Chantres and Hawkins also had an RBI apiece, and Chantres also added a hit to his stat sheet. Langfelder got his third victory as a pitcher in this game, which now makes him 3-2 on the season.

PBA will play Nova Southeastern University at home on Tuesday, Apr. 30 at 6 p.m. and now only have four games remaining in the 2024 season.
