WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic softball team finished its series against Barry at Simpson Field on Saturday.
The Sailfish had a chance to clinch the series after taking the game against the Bucs on Friday night. PBA only gave up three runs on the day, but it was a tough day at the plate for the 'Fish. The Sailfish dropped the first game, 1-0, before falling in game two, 2-1.
PBA plays its final home series next weekend against Embry-Riddle. The first game of the series is set for Friday at 6 p.m.
Game One – Barry: 1, PBA: 0
The Sailfish put two runners on base in the bottom of the first after singles from
Gracie Mullett and
Larken Maseda.
Chloe Nepveux singled through the right side. Mullett stayed put at third, but Maseda rounded hard at second base and was put in a precarious position with Mullett staying at third. She was tagged out for the final out of the frame.
Cambria Arturo turned in a stellar performance in the circle for game one. The senior pitcher did not allow a hit until the fourth inning. Barry started the inning with a single up the middle, followed by a bunt single. A sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third.
Gracie Mullett made a diving catch in right field for the second out of the inning, but it was deep enough for the runner at third to tag and make a 1-0 game.
The Sailfish could not muster a baserunner for the rest of the game. PBA finished with three hits, all in the first inning. Arturo tossed all seven innings, giving up one earned run on three hits and two walks with three strikeouts.
Game Two – Barry: 2, PBA: 1
PBA's defense and a strong start from
Ashlyn Storms kept the Sailfish in game two. Barry nearly scored in the second inning, but a strong throw from
Kaitlyn Campbell cut off a runner trying to score. PBA tagged out a retreating runner at third and got a second out on the trailing runner caught between second and third.
The Sailfish had a pair of singles in the bottom of the third. Campbell showed off her speed with an infield single, followed by another infield single from
Elisa Grande. Unfortunately for the Sailfish, the runners were left stranded.
Storms exited the game in the fifth inning after a leadoff single by the Bucs.
Lacy Marty entered the game and forced two quick outs, but a back-two-back single, a catcher's interference, and another single created a 2-0 lead for Barry.
PBA got one run back in the sixth inning. Grande tripled with one out and scored on a groundout to make it 2-1. Marty settled down in the circle, holding Barry scoreless in the sixth and seventh. PBA came up short in the seventh, falling 2-1 in the game.
Storms was charged with one earned run in four innings on five hits, one walk, and one strikeout. Marty pitched three innings in relief, giving up one run (none earned) on four hits with three punchouts. Grande led PBA with two hits.
