WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic softball team began its series against Embry-Riddle on Friday night at Simpson Field.
A PBA error cost them an early run and allowed the 'Fish to take a lead in the first inning. The Sailfish had several chances to push some runs across but failed to come up with some timely hits. The Eagles added three insurance runs in the sixth to pad their lead. The visitors held on to win, 4-0.
Karen Vasquez got the start in the circle. She pitched all seven innings, surrendering four runs (three earned) on eight hits, one walk, and finishing the game with three strikeouts. PBA totaled five hits in the game. Larken Maseda and Toree Hoobler led the 'Fish with two hits each, with both tallying a double.
The Eagles started the game with a pair of singles, but the Sailfish got a big out, throwing a runner out trying to advance to third. ERAU kept up its aggressive baserunning. The runner on first went from first to third on a groundout, drawing a bad throw from PBA, allowing the runner to trot home. Vasquez forced a groundout to limit the damage to one.
Evoni Rodriguez singled and stole second in the bottom of the first, but she was left stranded. Elisa Grande was hit by a pitch and stole second in the third inning, but she was left on second base as the tying run. Maseda doubled with one out in the fourth and advanced to third on a fielder's choice, but a popout to second base killed the rally.
ERAU recorded three runs on three hits, including a double and a walk, to make it a 3-0 game. PBA had two base runners in the bottom of the seventh, but a double play ended the inning.
The Sailfish take on the Eagles again on Saturday with a doubleheader at 12 and 2 p.m.
