MIAMI SHORES, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic baseball team fell to Barry University by a score of 4-3 on Tuesday night. The Sailfish (5-18) scored two runs to tie the game in the ninth inning but couldn't hold off the Buccaneers down the stretch.
In the first inning, Matthew Faranda ledoff the game for Sailfish and singled to third but got out at second on a fielder's choice. Shortly after, Green reached third on a throwing error on a pickoff attempt by Barry's pitcher with only one out on the board. Green then scored on a balk to give the 'Fish their first run of the evening. Ryan Webster was the starting pitcher for PBA and after striking out the first batter, the Buccaneers answered back in the bottom of the first with a two-run double, putting them up 2-1.
Webster was replaced in the bottom of the fifth by A.J. Prendergast. Webster pitched four innings, and though he gave up five hits and two runs, he did have two strikeouts. There would be no runs by either team until the bottom of the sixth when a Barry player hit a homer to open up the inning to put them up two runs. Coach Bottenfield made his second pitching change in the bottom of the eighth, going with Nolan Smoot to take over for Prendergast. Prendergast pitched three innings and only gave up two hits, a run, and also had a strikeout. The Sailfish were still down 3-1 going into the final inning.
In the bottom of the ninth, Nate Housen and Stanton Leuthner hit two singles to give the 'Fish a chance to tie the ball game with only one out on the board. Shortly after, Sean Williams hit a single down the middle to get himself an RBI. Kody Kelly did the same thing and tied the game at 3-3. Unfortunately, Barry still had some left in the tank and got bases loaded with only one out after Faranda replaced Smoot on the mound to open up the inning. With bases loaded, Faranda walked the Buccaneer batter and Barry walked off with a 4-3 victory.Â
Smoot only pitched for an inning and but had one walk and two strikeouts on four bats faced. Faranda was credited with the loss after giving up two hits, a run, and two walks. Faranda now has a 0-2 record as a pitcher.
The 'Fish are back on the road again this Friday Mar. 22 at 6 p.m. where they will face Eckerd College in an SSC matchup and begin a three game series that will play through the weekend.Â
