WINTER PARK, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic men's basketball team traveled to take on the Tars from Rollins College on Saturday.
The Sailfish (14-7, 8-5 SSC) put on an offensive clinic on the road, shooting 60 percent as a team, including 50 percent from 3-point range.
Jamaal Walker and
Grant Ledford turned in 20-point games as PBA cruised to a 95-77 win over Rollins (6-14, 3-10 SSC). Win today's win, the Sailfish move into sole possession of third place in the Sunshine State Conference standings.
Walker led the 'Fish with 26 points, two steals, two assists, and a rebound. Ledford followed with 21 points, four assists, and three rebounds of his own.
Will Lee played well, scoring 16 points, including four 3-pointers with four rebounds and a steal.
Trent McNair tallied 12 points with nine assists, five rebounds, and a block.
Marcus Montalvo added 10 points with eight assists, five rebounds, and four steals.
PBA showed off its jump-shooting prowess in the first half of the game, converting on seven of 13 3-point attempts. Walker helped the Sailfish pull away at the 10-minute mark in the first half. He scored three consecutive buckets for PBA, starting a 10-2 run that was capped off by a dunk by
Broderick Ellis, giving the Sailfish a 39-26 lead with 7:41 to play in the period. PBA led by as much as 14 in the half, following a 3-pointer from Lee. PBA led 50-39 at halftime after shooting 64 percent from the field.
The Sailfish kept all the momentum at the start of the second half. McNair opened the period with two 3-pointers, followed by a layup from Lee off a Montalvo steal. The run gave PBA a quick 19-point lead at the start of the period. Five minutes later, a 3-pointer from Montalvo and a bucket from Walker made it 68-46 PBA at the 14-minute mark.
Rollins didn't go down quietly, cutting the Sailfish lead back down to 11 after a short cold stretch from the PBA offense. It was too little too late for the Tars as PBA withstood the run, with Ledford scoring three consecutive buckets to close the game for the Sailfish. A 3-pointer from Ledford finished off the 95-77 win.
Turnovers made a big difference in the game. PBA forced 14 miscues by the Tars while taking care of the ball on the offensive end. The Sailfish scored 21 points off turnovers compared to 11 for RC.
The Sailfish travel to Boca Raton on Wednesday for a battle with Palm Beach County rival, Lynn. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
