Sailfish Fall in Extra Innings to Washburn

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic baseball team returned to action today as they hosted Washburn University for their second game of the season in as many days. A low-scoring affair came to life in the final two innings, as the Sailfish came up short, 7-4 in 10 innings. The Sailfish fall to 0-2 on the season with the defeat while the Ichibads move to 1-1.

The Sailfish received a quality start from Isaac Beebe, making his first appearance as a Sailfish. He surrendered one run in the first inning before settling in and blanking the visitors for the next three innings of play. The Sailfish answered the early Ichabods' run in the third innings when the lineup saw the Washburn starter for the second time. Lead-off hitter Matty Warren earned a walk and came in to score on a Nate Housen sacrifice fly to tie the game 1-1.

Washburn retook the lead in the fifth when a leadoff double was brought home on a ground out in the infield. Beebe finished a strong PBA debut as he went six innings, surrendering two runs on just three hits and two free passes to Washburn batters. The 'Fish trailed by a run when Beebe left the game as Nathan Espinal was the first man out of the bullpen, retiring one batter and walking one batter  before he was removed for the night by head coach Kent Bottenfield.

Daniel Foster went the rest of the way for PBA and was strong in his first innings of work as he was unscathed until the ninth inning. The Sailfish defense cracked in the ninth inning as two errors allowed two Washburn baserunners who would come around to score and make the Ichabods lead 4-1 after the top of the ninth.

Down to their final three outs, the Sailfish responded as their first two batters, Matthew Faranda and Stanton Leuthner, reached base and came around to score. Patrick Rakes doubled as a pinch hitter and was brought home by a Warren two-out single to tie the game 4-4 and head to extra innings.

The 'Fish appeared to have the momentum as they forced extra innings but the visitors would add three in the tenth as PBA was unable to answer in the home half of extra innings. Foster was hit with the loss for PBA as he went 3.2 innings allowing five runs, three earned. PBA finished with eight hits on the night, led by Leauthner who had three hits, and Warren who finished with two hits. The Sailfish defense let them down late as they finished with four errors overall and two big ones in the ninth inning.

PBA returns to action tomorrow as they host Tusculum at noon and North Greenville at 4 pm at J.M. Jake Rubin Park. Tusculum enters the game 0-1 with a defeat against Nova Southeastern while North Greenville enters as the No. 2 team in the nation with a win over Barry to start the year.
