WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic men's basketball team hosted Barry in a Sunshine State Conference matchup on Wednesday night.
With the clock winding down, PBA (7-1, 2-1 Sunshine State Conference) was ahead 72-71. Barry (4-3, 1-1 SSC) called a timeout with the ball with 17 seconds left in the game. The Bucs drew up a corner three, and the fadeaway shot went through to give the visitors a 74-72 lead. PBA dribbled down the court for a desperation three, but it was off the mark. The Bucs upset the No. 17-ranked Sailfish 74-72.
Tyler Burton stepped up in a big way for the 'Fish tonight. The freshman scored 19 points off the bench, shooting 5-for-10 from three with two steals.
Joshua Ward finished with 14 points, six rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Ward scored his 1,000th career point in the game. Alvin Tumblin Jr and
Graham Worland scored 11 points each. Worland knocked down three trays while Tumblin recorded four rebounds, two blocks, and two steals.
Jakob Hester tallied 10 points with nine rebounds and two blocks.
The Sailfish lost starting point guard
Will Lee due to injury five minutes into the contest. PBA persevered, feeding off the energy from the raucous Rubin Arena crowd. A 3-pointer from Worland, a free throw by Hester, and a layup by Burton gave the 'Fish a 28-8 lead with eight minutes left in the first period. Barry stepped it up on the defensive end, packing the paint and forcing PBA to try to convert from deep. A scoring drought let the Bucs cut into the lead, but the Sailfish led 39-32 at halftime.
The 'Fish continued to struggle to score out of the halftime break. The game was tied 50-50 after the first 10 minutes of the second period. Burton caught fire for PBA, rejuvenating his team and the crowd. Two consecutive 3-pointers from the freshman put the Sailfish back in front. Burton poured in 15 points in the second half. PBA held the lead until the 1:23 mark, and then a layup from Ward gave the 'Fish a 72-70 lead with a minute left. PBA had two attempts to make it a 3-point game but could not convert. That opened the door for the Bucs' 3-pointer to win the game 74-72.
Despite shooting below 40 percent in the second half, the Sailfish outshot the Bucs in the game 44 percent to 40 percent. Barry finished 4-for-18 from beyond the arc. Barry made up for it at the free throw line, converting on 14-of-20 attempts, including 10-for-12 in the second half. The visitors won the rebounding battle, 43-34, including 15 offensive rebounds leading to 14 second-chance points.
The Sailfish look to bounce back on Saturday against Lynn. Tipoff in Rubin Arena is set for 4:00 p.m.
